Social Media Article Reviews
The article YouTube Will Stop Sending Email Notifications to Alert Channel Subscribers to New Content addresses a common problem with most social media sites; spam emails. According to the article, YouTube plans to stop sending email notifications to channel subscribers because most of them do not read those emails. The lack of email interaction is predicted not to have any impact on YouTube viewership. The move follows Linkedin’s 2015 decision to reduce the number of emails sent to users who saw an upsurge of users. It is not a surprise that many YouTube subscribers do not appreciate constant and unnecessary emailing. Email inboxes are already too full to add notifications from social media sites. Since YouTube sends phone notifications to subscribers, there isn’t a need to back up with an email notification which is likely to be ignored by users. Personally, I do not interact with emails from social media sites, and I do not understand their importance either. I think doing away with emails is a great move that will remove the stress of dealing with unnecessary emails.
In the article Twitter Has updated its Warning Prompts on Potentially Harmful Tweet Replies, Hutchinson addresses the move by twitter to minimize bullying and social media harassment. Twitter will issue Warning prompts whenever a tweet is deemed potentially offensive and motivate users to revise their tweets before sending them. In the wake of social media bullying, I think this is an excellent move by Twitter to ensure the social media site is a safe place for all its users. While some argue that this is a violation of the freedom of speech, sometimes the freedom of speech is misused by people, and they have to be reminded to respect other users. This move by Twitter could potentially lead to a significant increase in the number of users. Bullying is one of the lead causes of suicide among young people today. The move by Twitter is a way of helping young people monitor their online interactions to avoid incidences of harassment.
