Colonization of North America

The article shows how colonization in North America begun and colonists’ intentions.   There were strategies used to conquer Virginia and Massachusetts Bay (Bolton & Marshall, 1920).

Colonists had intentions of conquering northern America for their economic gains

Discussion

Spain was the first to visit North America and had the intention of spreading the religion to the natives.   English viewed Spain’s strategy as weak to acquire North America and began to establish colonies on the coast of Virginia.   England had an advantage since they were politically and economically stable hence were more appealing to the new world. The reason as top why England was focusing on getting new lands was the investors who were willing to migrate poor people to America.  Also, Queen Elizabeth’s successors were long-ruling the parliaments that made people feel uneasy to stay in England.  The first England colony was established at Jamestown in 1607 by Virginia company.   Some diseases killed immigrants since the environment was not favorable to them (Jones, Wood, Borstelmann, May & Ruiz, 2013).   In the region, there were first settlers in the regions but England used a new strategy to interact with the natives.

England began by introducing ng tobacco as a mode of currency that attracted the natives in a new world.   They came in two distinct groups; the pilgrims whose intentions were to create a new church, and the puritans who were to restore the church of England. The pilgrims made sure they had a strong government by establishing the Mayflower Compact.   The Puritans settled in Massachusetts Bay.   They invested in the natives through the funds they had and were successful.   The natives found them better since they introduced a new religion to them hence were attracted to the new world.   Through funds, the two groups were able to control the regions.   The natives feared them since England was powerful than the Indians (Horning, 2013).

The geography of America favored England in economic development.   It was a market for goods and the source of raw materials like fur.  There were first settlers in the region that resisted England in the region.  Also, there were conflicts with Indians and diseases in Jamestown.   The region had 40 Indian tribes but 30 tribes were led by Powhatan.  Their invasion heightened conflicts between the Indians and England.  Food was the source of conflict.   The region was rich in minerals such as golds and silver and the natives were servants.   England began to seize Indian food stock which led to cut off supplies by Powhatan.  England began to feed on snakes, frogs, and dead bodies.
