- Mysophobia is an actual condition that many people suffer from, though it is more commonly known as “germaphobia.” However, each of us may have a little “germaphobe” inside of us. How has this class changed your behavior and/or outlook toward microorganisms in general? Are you more or less worried about them overall? Explain how and why.
Knowledge of microbiology has helped learn about different microorganisms and how they impact an individual’s lifestyle. I was initially worried about microbes in general since I lacked enough understanding of how they can be acquired or how they affect our environment. After this class, I know that I have to maintain asepsis through frequent handwashing techniques. Initially, I feared using public toilets for the same reason of collecting microbes. I still dread it, but I have gained management insights.
- Describe how a solid understanding of microbiology will help you in both your professional and personal lives. What are some things you have learned that you can take away from this class? How will you share this knowledge with others?
Microbiology knowledge will help me understand the pathology of different diseases that affect humans and how to treat them. The information on the genetic makeup of microorganisms is vital in unearthing the details of genetic engineering and how such novel ideas can be exploited in saving people from the burdens of disease, food insecurity, and environmental pollution.
On a personal level, the information will help me in protecting myself from harmful microbes. I will improve my health status since I will be able to avoid how different diseases are contracted, for example, through asepsis. The knowledge may be shared through my online social media accounts or face-to-face interaction with friends and relatives.
- Think back to when you first entered this class. Was the class harder, or easier than you expected in the very beginning?
When I first entered the class, I imagined learning about myriads of microbes and thought that it would be harder. However, as time passed, I realized that it was not as technical as I had anticipated.
