Reflection paper on learning style
The readings and surveys taught me many things that I did not know. First, the readings have shown me that when I was writing essential points in the classroom (especially in red), I was a visual learner. Since I could not remember the correct answers when I remember the highlighted red notes I could now remember the answers. This I have come to realize that I am a visual learner. This is because visual learners learn and remember what they see the most. Also, I used to remember best the diagrams, pictures, maps, designs, outlines, graphics and charts placed on the classroom walls than the notes written on books. This, I have also come to realize it’s because I am a visual learner. The readings suggested ways of approaching learning that I had not tried. Such approaches include the use of gestures, the use of posters, use of colors, and the use of drawings. If I use these approaches then I would become an excellent visual learner.
I think I need to adapt to a new learning style because being a visual learner will not lead me to the career path I wish to pursue. Since being a visual learner will lead to careers such as engineering, advertising, architecture, construction, photography and graphic design none of which I have interest in. Therefore, I will have to adopt a new learning style- auditory which will lead me to my career path. I have always wanted to be either a news anchor in a television station, a lawyer or a counsellor all of which are associated with auditory learning. Therefore to make my dream come true, I will have to abandon the visual learning and adapt auditory learning.
I believe I will be trained through the new learning styles in the school of law, mass communication or psychological classes. I anticipate my employers to require certain types of learning during my career. They will, for example, require auditory learning because they will need to have the necessary knowledge and competence in leading. Also, they need to be good when delivering speeches and during debates all of which require auditory learning.
My Professional Development Plan (PDP) for the next five years
Year 1: I am currently a college student in journalism and mass media. My ultimate dream is to become the managing director of a senior media house in America. I am fluent in speaking, am confident when talking to many people, charismatic and charming. I believe in my abilities. Meanwhile, as a student, I am putting a lot of effort into my studies.
Year 2: after graduating, I hope to work as an intern in one of the media houses. During this period I will gain experience that would help me in my subsequent endeavours. I will learn how to interact with people, the viewers and other colleagues. Also, I will learn some basics and logistics in the newsroom like entertaining the viewers and maintaining eye contact with them.
Year 3: I will work as an editor in the media house. I will be writing articles and stories in the newspapers. This will help me to enrich my language and improve my reading skills. I will also be able to learn the interests of the readers and viewers.
Year 4: I will make my debut on the television station. Here I will use the knowledge gained during my previous two years for me to influence the viewers. I will use my fluency in language and charisma to attract more viewers. The knowledge gained by observing other news anchors will also play a pivotal role for me in becoming the most celebrated news anchor.
Year 5: I will step up as a news anchor and be promoted to be the managing director of the media house. Here I will use all my skills and knowledge gained during the previous years to run the media house successfully. I will be ensuring only official news is communicated to the viewers promptly. It will be a great pleasure for me being the top boss of the media house for the rest of my career until I retire.
