Plagiarism may be a growing downside ordinarily among students. Merriam- Webster Dictionary defines plagiarism as: “To steal and pass off the ideas or words of another as one’s own: to use (another’s production) without crediting the source.” Plagiarism has its consequences; however, there are ways to deal with them.
There are several sorts of plagiarism that students don’t understand or might not notice. Students are currently taking information from the internet and using it as their own (Gabriel,2010). Plagiarism is becoming a typical behavior amongst students. Many students have become lazy in the completion of assignments and research dissertations required in their course work. They are looking for the shortest route to complete their tasks, in the view that the lecturer won’t notice.
The various types of plagiarisms are highlighted as follows: direct plagiarism this is also referred to as copy-pasting, this is once somebody directly uses a similar paragraph with similar wordings as those of another author; mosaic plagiarism, is once someone uses ideas from different authors to create a modified version of information yet the ideas are still not original; self-plagiarism, this comes to play when an author uses the same parts of his previous work without properly citing them; global plagiarism, this is when you are using someone’s work while pretending the ideas and words are yours without properly mentioning and giving them credit for the same. However, in cases, students plagiarize, not knowingly, the teacher is supposed to take the blame. Students found doing the same should face the consequences outlined in this paper.
Different universities apply different measures and consequences in various ways, usually depending on the magnitude of the plagiarized assignment. If a student is found to have plagiarized for the first time, the teacher should allow the student to repeat the same task and use the correct citation tools. However, some lecturers may award the student fail or award no mark on plagiarized work. The lecturer is required to report the misconduct to the disciplinary committee for record and follow up in case the same is repeated in the future.
Some institutions may expel the student on the grounds of violating the school code of conduct by the misconduct of plagiarism. Expulsion is possible when the student has a significant form of plagiarism, usually when writing research papers. However, complete ejection should be done on a case by case basis. Therefore for students to avoid such a consequence, they should avoid plagiarism.
Institutions may adopt policies that allow permanent notations on the student’s transcripts that indicate plagiarism. This type of punishment may affect the student’s life even after graduation because the writing stays on the student’s transcript for more than seven years.
In conclusion, as discussed in the paper, plagiarism may be accidental or deliberate. However, students are advised to always keep in mind sources of information they use for reference purposes. Students are also encouraged to quote information obtained from different sources and cite the sources correctly to avoid consequences faced due to plagiarism in institutions.
