Ethical Leadership of Kevin Johnson, the Starbucks` CEO
According to Starbucks’s website, there are various outlined values about the company. They include:
- Delivering quality services in all they do. That means the company holds itself accountable in case of issues with their services.
- Being present, connecting with respect, dignity, and transparency.
- Acting with courage and bravely challenging the status quo by finding new ways to grow and expand the company’s fraternity.
- And lastly, creating a culture that is warm and welcoming to everyone.
With the above values, it is clear that Johnson clarified his values and that of the company values in his apology and his subsequent actions. He took the issues that had happened in the company seriously and put all his efforts and energy in trying to fix them all as soon as possible. He made an immediate action by apologizing for what had happened and further took an extra step of closing 8000 stores to carry out training. The training was expected to increase the quality of the services offered at Starbucks. The practice also sought to reduce the bias actioned against the company by educating the employees. These actions proved how severe and intense Johnson regards the values of the company.
Furthermore, The Starbucks` CEO, Kevin Johnson, realized the presence of gaps between stated values and the actual values. Before the incident happened, Tangdall (2018) notes that there existed a flexible policy that allowed the manager to ask the customers to leave out of the place. Johnson tried to change this policy by implementing its values through the “use of third-place policy” (Starbucks). The policy states that everybody is welcomed to utilize and use various facilities of Starbuck, such as restrooms, regardless of whether or not they are making a purchase.
