One of the things that surprised me in chapters four and five is the leaders’ challenges when developing the states. As outlined in the chapters for the transportation systems to be well developed, there had to be several things that needed to be done. Also, a lot of resources had to be provided to transport the development of the transportation sector. Some of these challenges include the delayed implementation of orders, which delayed the whole process. For instance, when in 1832, the congress ordered for results to be submitted to the Michigan border, but this was not until two years later. Also, despite these challenges, transportation in Michigan was still developed, and there were major advancements that were made.
Some of the unique challenges that Michigan faced were the war’s presence, which disrupted the activities since they could not get easy access to materials that were required in developing the transportation networks in the area. The dispute over the Toledo strip mainly contributed to the increase of the conflicts in the area. During that time, the war made it hard for development since there were no settlements in the area as most people fled due to the conflicts and, therefore, presented the region’s development.
The discovery of natural resources in Michigan accelerated the real development in that there were more resources to build public infrastructure such as trains systems, which people could rely on as a means of transportation. The area then developed because the improved transport systems enabled the transportation of agricultural products and other mining products, for instance, which means that other sectors grew and, in turn, accelerated the development of the region.
