Applied Practice Experience Reflection
Health care inequality among minorities in America has been an issue for a very long time. It is sad to see that this happens in a country that claims to be in the front line to support equality, where the law states that everyone is equal. Most of the minority groups that are affected are those with racial and ethnic differences, for instance, African Americans and Latinos. Health inequality takes different forms, such as there can be seen to be higher rates of death and chronic illnesses among the minority ethnic groups as compared to the whites (Weber et al. 2018). Well, it cannot be said that the country has not taken any measures to reduce health inequality, but still, there are many cases of health disparities among the minority groups.
I think that it is very important to address this topic since the law advocates for equity, and every person has the right to be created equally without discrimination. It is also important to reduce the health inequalities since inequalities affect everyone, even those that are not discriminated against (Sohn, 2017). For instance, if the minority groups are not given good health care, and an infectious disease emerges, it will also spread to the rest of the population.
Inequalities are also avoidable in that they originate from government policies such as tax policies and welfare and healthcare benefits, and some interventions can be made to eliminate the disparities. In addition, addressing health care disparities is generally cost-effective in that it helps tackle other issues such as crime (Coid et al. 2019). In places where the minority are discriminated against, they result in activities such as crime, which affects the whole society and is costly to reduce. Therefore, I urge you to consider funding the program, which is aimed at addressing the issue of health care inequality and disparities among the minority groups in America.
