Lying
Lying is a common behavior among individuals; it can develop from early childhood, persist into the teenage year, and at times continue into adult life. According to (REF) lying is termed as an antisocial behavior that individual that develops. Most people say that lying may have its benefits, for instance, individual are able to feel better about themselves at the same time make themselves look better into other people’s eyes. However, the effects of lying are dire, lying is considerable cognitively depleting and threaten individual self-worth by eroding their trust in the society. This essay will expound more on the various causes of lying at the same time discuss some of the effects of lying.
Causes of Lying
One of the most causes of lying in an individual is the desire to sustain their positive self-concept. Most people yearn for positive emotions from people around them and they tend to exaggerate and lie about a situation. People’s efforts in lying may be successful but with them being driven by the desire for themselves to maintain their position in the community the individual may make some misguided bets about their future performance. Another cause for people lying is when they are motivated by material gain, in this case, an individual may lie out of their self-interest and this makes them choose to deceive people so that they can get what they want. As claimed by (REF) people who are accustomed to lying make their deceptive behavior become a social norm and when their desire motivates their lying then they tend to precedent that being dishonesty is appropriate.
Effects of Lying
One of the effects of lying is that individuals are motivated to rationalize and justify their dishonesty and lies to themselves. These situations make them view their behavior as good morally accepted. The consequences of this behavior are dire, reason being, individual at this point become morally disengaged, and with them having a notion that it is okay to lie they develop a behavior that is termed as resultantly deception which as a result influences other forms of dishonesty. Further, lying creates gaps for individuals in a way that people alienated themselves from any activity they are involved in. The reason being a person who is used to lying will never value compassion and therefore people around him will cease their connection with the individual so that they can not be among the individual dishonesty schemes. Moreover, most pro-social lies always affect any large social networks that a person has build since it gets hard to maintain it.
Conclusion
The effects and consequences of lying are not as simple as people may view them. Individuals may think that lies only breed contempt and guilt but in other cases, they do so much more. For instance lies destroy fostered relationships, erode trust as well as destroying any social networks made by the individual. This means that people need to predict of weigh all these consequences before they result into any form of lying. Overall, even with lying having some advantages such as an individual feeling better about themselves, they tend to create issues, this may threaten an individual self-worth since all the trust that people, and society have in them is instantly eroded.
