How to Deal with Anxiety

An anxious person may deal with fear, worry, and apprehension, which is experienced on emotional, cognitive, and physical levels. Chronic anxiety may lead to one having disturbing or negative thoughts. It is often accompanied by symptoms such as trembling, sweating, and shortness of breath.

It can be challenging for people to manage feelings of anxiety. It can feel like you have no control over yourself and that anxiety is taking over your life. However, there are ways in which you can deal with anxiety.

  1. Breathe:

Whenever you feel an anxiety attack coming on, take a break, and focus on what is triggering your panic. You may be able to identify the past or future event that is worrying you and triggering your anxiety.

When you constantly worry about the future or feel upset about a past event, you steer away from the present. When you feel yourself slipping away from the present moment, take the time to sit down and take a few deep breaths. By breathing deeply, you can be mindful again of the present and come back to reality.

  1. Identify your triggers

Anxiety and panic are often accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, trembling, and a rapid heartbeat. To understand the roots of your anxiety, it is best to identify what is triggering these symptoms.

A good idea can be writing down all the factors that bother you. It can also help if you can talk about your feelings with a friend or a family member. Whenever you feel yourself spiraling out of control, make it a habit to express your feelings.

  1. Change your attitude

An anxious person may worry find himself worrying about things that may never happen, and even when everything is okay, he may worry over potential events. Life is unpredictable, but you can choose to deal with it graciously. By changing your attitude about anxiety, you can learn to let go of fear. For instance, if you are worried about losing your job, you can be grateful for having a job you love. If there is a real possibility of you getting laid-off, be proactive, and start looking for other jobs. Taking action can help you deal with your feelings of anxiety.

  1. Indulge in other activities

Some days it is enough to take the time to stop and breathe. However, on other days, that might not be enough. In such cases, it is best to redirect yourself and indulge in other relaxing activities. Here are a few ideas:

Clean your room or apartment.

Take up a creative activity such as painting.

Go for a long walk or engage in relaxing exercises such as yoga.

Meditate

Listen to music

Read a good book
