My Story
The story is about Covid19 safety concerns from essential workers of the Latin community. A survey done on the matter suggests that the Black and Latin communities feel more vulnerable and unsafe compared to white people. Access to job benefits such as healthcare is the main concern for most Latin.
The Latinx Community I learned about
The story is about Latino essential workers living in Massachusetts. As suggested by the survey 78% of this group do not feel safe going back to work in the middle of the pandemic. I learned that a huge part of this community does not enjoy healthcare benefits from work. This has resulted in elevated levels of stress as a result of the pressure mounting on the individuals. Additionally, most people from this community earn low wages and are forced to put themselves at risk to provide for their families. Racial inequalities present a challenge for working during the pandemic. This group also faces insecurities with regards to their day to day life. According to the survey, Latino essential workers have insecurities about food, child care, and housing. The conditions faced by this community and other minority groups make them stand out amid the pandemic.
A Counter-Narrative of the Story
Concerns raised by the narrative can be addressed without debilitating the community with racial ideals. Awareness of racial inequality does not capacitate action towards combating the disease, rather, it should allow the establishment of better policies. Universal health plans would significantly ease the situation. However, economic setbacks may not allow the provision of such services to all workers. Therefore, employers should consider cheaper alternatives that would make working in this pandemic safer for all races. Job sites should be organized to allow social distancing. Workers should also be provided for protective equipment and hand sanitizers. Furthermore, the workers should receive hazard pay because they are placing themselves at risk. While it might be impossible to fight racial inequalities because of class structures, we can combat the risks involved in working during the pandemic.

My scholar homies should know that the Latin community is a crucial element of the essential workforce. They ought to know the type of struggles these strong men and women face while conducting their businesses. Massachusetts has some of the strongest labor protection laws compared to most states. This story raises alarm on the working conditions in other states and how many more Latinos may be at risk of contracting the virus. There is a growing concern on how the minority conduct their jobs during this pandemic. It is important to realize that the right to safety amidst the pandemic is a basic human right. Regardless of the types of wages, the essential workers need to be considered while establishing workplace guidelines. Having a diverse workforce makes an organization have a more critical outlook towards the ever-evolving paradigm of the business scape. Preserving the integrity of such ideals requires consideration of all the involved parties.
