Biology Overview
Generally, Biology is the study of the life of human beings, plants, and animals. The primary concern of this subject is living things. Biology explains living things are the ones which transform energy from one form to another (“Intro to biology, Khan Academy,” 2019) Living things use energy to grow, change and reproduce. Additionally, Biology is concerned about a range of subjects, including cells, DNA, reproduction, bacteria, and viruses.
The Scientific Method
Scientific methods are systematic in nature as they follow a particular procedure. One of the critical steps in scientific methods is observation (“The scientific method,” 2019) the next step is observing and then finally getting the explanation. Scientific methods explain the reasons behind the occurrences of most events. They ensure that the foundations of people’s ideas are concrete.
Preparing to Study Biology
It is essential to know the basics of biology in order to establish a concrete foundation for learning the subject. The top fundamentals of reading biology include open-mindedness, critical thinking, and curiosity. One should also be ready to be involved with other scientific subjects like chemistry, statistics, math, and Physics. The aspects, as mentioned above, will make reading biology fun and east. However, if one might not have mastered the other background subjects, they can catch up in the course of reading, depending on their willingness.
What is life?
Most descriptions of life are operational explanations that help people in distinguishing living and nonliving things. The primary characteristics of living things include organization, metabolism, homeostasis, growth, and reproduction, response, and evolution. The list as afire0mentioned is not fully proofed as some characteristics are not present in some living things. Thus, the question of the meaning of life is still unanswered as a result of the distinct nature of living things. The topic of what life means is still unresolved.
The Scientific Method
Biology and other sciences in general, take the scientific method as a problem-solving approach. The first step of the scientific method is to make an observation, to strike a thinking mode. Next, ask a question of why the vent happened. Propose a hypothesis of the underlying reasons. Make predictions that will help solve the observation. Test the predictions, and finally iterate the final result.
Control Experiments
The experiment that is used to prove a specific hypothesis is called a control experiment. It gives a foundation that enables the observer to see if the treatment of an error in a new experiment is effective. Therefore, a controlled experiment holds other factors constant except for the independent variable. The most common kind is that which compares the control group against the experimental items. All the variables are treated as identical, expect the aspect being investigated.
