Transformational and Symbolic Frame

According to Bolman and Deal, leaders perceive the experiences of organizations through leadership styles and frames. Leadership constitutes four frames: the structural frame, human resource, political frame, and symbolic frame. A transformational leader should possess all four frames. Therefore, the symbolic frame is closely related to transformational leadership. It helps leaders develop organizational symbols and culture, which, in return, shapes the behavior of employees and shares the organization’s mission and identity. Transformational leaders are charismatic and focus on enthusiasm to ensure that all employees grow and work effortlessly towards achieving the organization’s goals. Similarly, the symbolic frame helps leaders be enthusiastic, charismatic and focused on the organization’s objectives. Howard also groups leaders into various types with type B, explaining a symbolic leader and closely explaining what transformational leaders focus on.

Symbolic framing is a powerful perspective on leadership. Transformational leadership requires symbolic framing, especially when the leaders want to tap into language and its power. Today’s business world demands credible communication skills and effective persuasive language to attract customers and motivate employees. Besides, transformational leaders define meaning in every situation; therefore, symbolic framing helps them in doing this and connecting to others (Bolman & Deal, 2013). When transformational leadership and symbolic framing are used together, they enable leaders in figuring out the best ways to lead institutions, motivate, and reward employees to ensure the achievement of the set goals and objectives.

Furthermore, the symbolic frame addresses employees’ needs so that they create sense and meaning in their workplaces. Both perspectives inspire people and make them feel significant and distinctive. Through this, leaders can achieve the set goals and objectives of the organization.
