Chapter 10: The drug Control Initiative

Many law-abiding citizens reside in areas with drug challenges, and some of them are sometimes aware of the specific drug users and drug dealers. These communities depend on the police to eliminate drugs from their neighborhoods within the community. The concept of community poling refers to the process of apportioning police officers to specific areas is that they can familiarize themselves with the inhabitants and help in the deterrence and reduction of crime in the particular community. Typically, the main objective of policing-oriented services is not to arrest and incarnate as a mechanism of controlling crime. Instead, their emphasis is on prevention and maintaining order, which ranges from supervising parking lot cleanups, working with the inhabitants to impose restrictions on alcohol vendors and subduing the local retail drug market.

The community police officers usually have a significant task to solve the social challenges relevant to crime by use of both informal and formal means, and also attempt to enhance support for the families or residential based institutions to increase public safety. Most anti-drugs agencies like the FAA and the FBI are tasked with investigating drug-related crimes and arresting the criminals that are found with the illegal drugs. Therefore, it can be projected that the goals of the community policing taunt with some of the drug policies that seek ways of arresting and incarceration, as a way of mitigating crimes.

Most community inhabitants mostly perceive drug users as nonstandard. Community police officers usually focus on decreasing the fear of crime by protecting the law0 abiding residents from offensive behavior caused by drug dealing activities. From this viewpoint, community policing measures need to be less tolerant of deviant behavior by inducing stricter standards on drug traffickers and users. Even though this may conflict with the policy of improving the lives of the drug user, community policing is still essential in the nature and objectives of law enforcement.

Chapter 11: Critical Issues in Drug Control

Some individuals believe that the drug challenge must be dealt with rapidly, and would be dealt either through excessive law enforcement measures or legalization measures. Apparently, the solutions to the drug problems, are challenging and time-consuming. It is indicated that accepting responsibility is majorly a crucial step in solving drug dealing activities. Many policies put in place to control drugs are usually controversial. Less strict measures offer the little capability of controlling the problem. The rigorous methods bring about the controversy as they are more inclined to expanded policy sovereignty, leading to some people developing the fear of the erosion of individual freedom. Nevertheless, the controversial measures of controlling drugs have been proven as more competent and inventive than the standard conventional approaches. Some of the rules incorporated to control drugs include the reverse drug sting, electronic surveillance, needle exchange program, forfeiture of attorney’s fees, and drug control through sports.

One controversial method that has been deemed useful in the identification of drug traffickers is the criminal profile method. Even though police tend to avoid the term profile, they incorporate this technique in many of the seizures. The profiling method mainly focuses on the drugs that are in transit. The drug couriers are east to seize as the 1989 Solow Act gives the legitimacy of law enforcement agencies to stop and question people who act or seem like tike drug traffickers and drug dealers. The criminal investigators are recognized in their efforts to distinguish the drug dealer character traits from that of the general population. The reverse sting mechanism is one of the effective enforcement strategies that has been used to help drug users. The undercover officer acts as a drug seller who arrests the buyer, and the drugs are kept as evidence. Surveillance and drug testing are also other concerns about drug enforcement measures. Generally, all possible methods are integrated by criminal justice agencies to try and solve the drug problem.

Chapter 12: Legalizing Marijuana—America’s Latest Social Experiment

Some individuals argue that the legalization of drugs would lead to both foreign and domestic drug dealer’s eminent success that they have been anticipating, hence the conversion of the black market to an open market. From my standpoint, legalizing Marijuana is not a significant step and is more of a backward step, since most of the drugs were once considered illegal for some substantial reason. Drug use has more adverse effects as compared to their positive applications. It would be concrete if only medical uses of Marijuana were enforced instead of legalizing drug dealing in the entire state. If the drug uses are not controlled, the adverse effects will continue being rampant on the drug users who claim that they are using it for recreational purposes.

Both the community and criminal justice agencies should be actively involved in eradicating drug use. Measures have to be strictly taken to keep illegal drugs out of the state and off each of the streets. The best policies would involve cutting out the distribution of the drugs before they reach the drug users and buyers, by targeting drug dealers, traffickers, cultivators and street corner drug sellers who work in the black market. Stricter enforcement and other robust enforcement strategies including the destruction of underground airfields and laboratories will help to reduce some of the illegal drug dealings and use to a particular extent, as well as keeping the generic drug use at firm levels.
