Opposing Viewpoints Essay #2
The Two Thousand Words manifesto complains of the battering of the hopes that people had on social programs after the war, which affected the spiritual wellbeing and character of the people. The communist party, which had these promises were taken over by selfish individuals who exerted power on people taking away hope. However, the manifesto presents new reforms coming from inside the communist party and is advocating for democracy. On the other hand, the letter to Czechoslovakia advocates for socialism, claiming that the developments in the country were offensive, being backed by imperialism and reactionary forces. The claim is that Czechoslovakia has been under socialism, and therefore, the moves of the new leaders of the communist party were jeopardizing the entire social system interest.
From the two arguments above, the letter by Leonid Brezhnev to Czechoslovakia gives a better case than the manifesto. This is because, at this time, Czechoslovakia had just healed from war and other events that endangered the spiritual and economic conditions of the country. The citizens of Czechoslovakia were anticipating relief from the social programs that they were used to; it the previous social system. This is what strengthens the position of Brezhnev over the manifesto. The manifesto is correcting dictatorship of the new rulers of the communist party, which is introducing democracy. According to the economic and spiritual status of Czechoslovakia at that time, it needed help, not change in the political system.
I can use my faith as a Christian to see which view of the party served the needs of the people. The analysis will be on the motive of each party and the one with integrity. For example, the Brezhnev letter showed more care for the people, while the manifesto was more of the leaders. This analysis would be done in consideration of the needy position the people were eating the moment.
