A drug refers to a chemical substance that has a physiological impact on the body when ingested or introduced. Drug abuse refers to the usage of either legal or illegal substances in a way you shouldn’t. Drugs have different effects where some are long-lasting or even permanent. Some of the results can still be felt even after the habit is stopped. Medications can be introduced in the body in different ways, including inhalation, smoking, injection, and ingestion. The effects of substance abuse depend on the delivery method used to introduce it. Like for instance, a drug delivered by ingestion has an immediate impact, while one delivered via ingestion tends to have a delayed effect. Drugs affect the normal function of the brain interfering with the ability of a person to make choices. This leads to one having extreme and intense cravings. Later on, this intense craving leads to substance dependency and addiction.

The brain, less than 3 pounds, is the most complex organ in a human body. It regulates all your body functions and helps you translate and react to everything you experience. Drugs interfere with the normal functioning of the brain neuron responsible for sending, receiving processing of information through the neurotransmitter. Drugs like marijuana and heroin mimic the natural structure of a neurotransmitter, thereby activating neurons. Even though they can enable to activate the neuron, they don’t do it as a natural neurotransmitter. This causes abnormal messages to be sent all over the network system. This then makes a victim have poor judgmental skills, low ability to learn, loss of memory, and poor decision making. Effects of drug abuse: Physical and psychological n.d.).

Substance abuse during the pregnancy period is on the rise worldwide. Drugs mostly used during this period include amphetamines, marijuana, tobacco, ethanol, caffeine, and toluene-based solvents. Polysubstance is also common. During pregnancy, drug and substance abuse are highly associated with fetal and maternal morbidity. Depending on the substance abuse tremor, premature labor, cigarette smoking, lack of prenatal care are some of the suggested risk factors of the habit. Children exposed to drugs tend to have developmental problems relating to behavior, thinking, and attention. Besides, the abused substance can be passed to the child through the mother breast milk.

Drug dealers, peddlers, and users find themselves in serious legal consequences like facing jail time, fines or even lose child custody. They may also end up with a permanent criminal record. This record leads to difficulty obtaining a job as an employer conduct a background inspect on the potential employee for sensuality that these new hires have no legal liability. A few things should be considered while choosing the right treatment program. For example, look for a scheme that implements an evidence-based treatment program. Consider if the institution is state-owned or private as some of the state-owned institutions are free. Also, consider whether to take an inpatient or outpatient service.

The addition is a complicated mental illness that can occur due to stress, history of violence at home, or genetic predisposition. With the identification of predisposing factors leading to the habit, experts can identify the most appropriate treatment. This treatment procedure, if adhered to, can help one regain complete control over there life again.
