People with Disability

After watching the video, I feel sorry that I have been handling people with disabilities the wrong way. Often, I pity them and feel they need my help; the thought of they are not just the average human being. The caption “See the person, not the disability” requires that people with disability need to be respected, and taken as other people, and not be seen treated in a unique way which Supercrips their disability. They appreciate it that way rather than being childlike, needing charity or some help, and being dependent (Shapiro, 2015).  The questions that come to mind when dealing with people with disabilities is what they can do and what they cannot manage to do, based on the kind of disability they have. For example, I may ask myself concerning a blind person “Does she know where she is going really.”

People with disabilities, in most cases, are categorized together with the sick so that people imagine that they would be happy if they were given an antidote to heal their condition. However, like Jones, people living with disabilities need to accept and appreciate that their disability is their nature rather than sickness. I have interacted very little with people living with disabilities. However, with the few that I have associated closely, one thing is that majority of them go through a difficult time. What people think is a favor to them is an insult. An example is the story of John Hockenberry, who jolts his colleagues when they realize he was disabled despite the tremendous achievements he had made (Shapiro, 2015).  Casually, people would imagine that people with disabilities are not able to do some of the activities.
