Gino Pozzo
Gino Pozzo, the owner of England’s Watford FC, is a figure whose reputation has been sending waves all over the European sports scene. His passion for football dates way back from his childhood. Both his parents, Giuliana and Gianpaolo Pozzo, were passionate football fanatics who lived in Udine, Italy. His mother was related to former leaders of a football club in Italy, Udinese Football Club. Therefore, the Pozzo’s were stern supporters of the club.
Gino moved to the United States at the age of 18, joining Harvard University and later earning a Master’s. Several years later, he married and decided to move to Barcelona, Spain, where he resided for twenty years.
In 2013, Gino and his family moved to London. This was within the first year of acquiring a new football club, Watford FC. He was determined to continue with the legacy of the Pozzo family, passion for football. At this period, the club was in the Fourth Division and heavily indebted. However, his long term goal was set, make Watford Football Club a success again. He believed that the club was destined for growth and greatness.
Football is not just any other industry. It is a multi-million industry that requires more than passion for the game to run. However, Gino Pozzo seemed to be heading in the right direction. During his first season as owner, the club signed several international loanees. They also established a top drawer global scouting system that would recruit young and athletic talent. This helped the club in the long run, helping them acquire valuable players that have helped the club until now. All these efforts saw Watford climb from the Fourth Division to the Premier League in only four years.
Gino’s efforts to revive Watford FC has proved to be a success. He ranked fourth on Talksporst’s CEO football club owners of 2019 rankings. The current Watford squad has also been considered as the best since the club’s 1980’s glory days. He continues to invest in the club, from major player signings to improving the training grounds.
