COMPARISON OF RESEARCH ARTICLES
Summary
- The fear of childbirth among some Americans makes them opt for cesarean delivery. The study in this article support fear of mode of delivery is similar among non-pregnant and pregnant young women. By understanding why some females fear birth, can help inform public intervention that would reduce panic and promote birth as a typical life event.
- In countries like the US, one in three babies is delivered by cesarean section- a procedure that has been most commonly practiced in operating rooms in the US. Malpractice liability bears the responsibility for the epidemic of cesarean section. The article presents empirical data that covers the view of the cesarean rate for births rates and associated damage caps. In this journal also, there are policy initiatives suggested to help reduce rates of cesarean section.
Topic Summary
The topic selected for this assignment is the increasing rates of cesarean sections in birthrates. I chose to discuss this health issue because the cesarean section rate has gone high not only in the US but also around the world. The topic got my attention through the news, prompting the question of why most females are choosing a CS over natural childbearing. C-section outnumbers natural deliveries in various parts of the world, and even in less developed countries, the rates are incredibly high at clinics. Personally, I do not understand why individuals would prefer C-section while there are no birth complications involved, and the methods can do more harm than goods to both moms and the baby.
Significance of the two Articles
The article by Stoll, Edmonds & Hall (2015) is relevant to health care delivery in the US because it gives insight into some factors attributing to high cesarean section rates. The study in this journal navigates how fear among young women leads to a preference for cesarean delivery over a natural birth. With that, psychological interventions like counseling can be adopted to address this issue. On the other hand, the article by Safrin (2018) provided useful information to the health care system on initiatives to help reduce cesarean section rates. One of the approaches suggested is a disclosure of hospital and physician cesarean section rates to keep track of malpractices.
Major Functions Provided by Research
An essential function in the article by Stoll, Edmonds & Hall (2015) is an exploration of how fear of childbirth and preference of C-section among young American women leads to increasing rates. The function of the second article by Safrin (2018) is the application or informing of the actin to lower the cesarean section rate in the US healthcare system. The author also informs that unnecessary cesarean poses harm to the child, and mother and moral issues are likely is a situation where C-sections are performed for liability avoidance. To keep a record on the current progress concerning C-section delivery, data must be collected for a minimum of one calendar month, according to the US department of health and human services. In this case, the health department of maternal services has to provide regular information to keep track of patients attending C-sections.
Potential Environments Appropriate to Research and Data Monitoring
Data research and monitoring are best done within the registry, health care information departments. At the registry, patients’ records such as admissions can be obtained and monitored easily. In the IT department, both patient and healthcare professionals’ details can be researched and monitored easily electronically. The integration of electronic health records (EHR) has made information sharing easy within healthcare delivery hence better accessibility and monitoring.
Impact of the Studies
Studies chosen for this assignment were intended to inform and influence approaches to health care on how to manage the increasing rates of cesarean sections in birth rates. The influence is through recommended approaches to know why women prefer C-sections and devise programs like education to enlighten the risk involved. Also, the articles influence healthcare through the suggested approach, like mandating disclosure of C-section and include the practice in Medicare performance-based initiatives. In that way, hospital C-section will be availed to the public, and this allows patient informed consent and shaming those overusing the operation.
The role the Allied Health Professional Plays
Regarding the issue of the C-section rate in the US healthcare system, professionals have a role to play, such as enlightening patients about the benefits and harm of using this operation. Also, they can offer referrals to counseling services for young American women who experience fear of going through natural childbirth. Another role played is making sure C-sections are only performed per medical advise and procedures are done successfully. Keeping track and recording the number of patients who prefer C-sections by healthcare professionals is a great contribution to research and data monitoring.
