In Walmart’s case study, several issues have been highlighted. First, Walmart is importing goods and charging the customers low prices to push the small stores out of businesses. Secondly, Walmart is paying employees with low salaries. Walmart is also involved in bribery to obtain building permits in Mexico. Walmart’s experience shows us that social responsibility affects the success of a business.
Walmart is socially responsible. Walmart’s ability to push many businesses out of operations through its low prices has led to many small businesses and stores’ downfall. Walmart has many stores, and it has polluted environments. Walmart has many customers because of the low prices of its products. Further, Walmart has full responsibility for the other merchants’ downfall because when Sam Walton brought the first store, he imported products that were cheap, leading to the collapse of stores that sold locally produced goods.
The Walmart way is to make customers feel at home when at their stores and fulfill their expectations. Besides, they have employees who greet customers at the doors and ask customers if they need help. Since now Sam is no longer there to visit the stores, the stores are dirty, and employees are less friendly, and it is facing stiff competition.
Walmart was at the front line of supporting the American buy plan that promoted America’s locally produced goods. However, Walmart is now the leading overseas importer of cheap goods than American made goods. Walmart imports affordable products to satisfy its customers; however, this is not socially responsible.
Many of the opponents of Walmart in America argued that Walmart was the epitome of Capitalism. Moreover, the other ant activists opposed the business because it polluted the environment. Besides, activists argued that Walmart’s culture conflicted with the external culture, and the businessmen wanted to maintain their status quo. In New England, the opposition was to protect the areas’ culture. The labor unions opposed Walmart because it paid employees low salaries.
Walmart has the responsibility to compensate its employees. Further, it should contribute to environmental conservation since it polluted many environments. Criticisms on the company’s way of doing things will always be there. The best strategy is to analyze the opponents’ strategies and find a way of creating good public image.
