Importance of Giving Credit to Others on your Work

Giving credit to others on the sources that you used while writing your work is vital and useful. For instance, when you have paraphrase or direct quotation of a particular source, there are essential things you should consider before citing the source. Accordingly, giving credit to your work is vital to the readers; it allows them to locate the references if they are interested in your topic. Also, it provides confidence that you have done your work ethically, and finally, it helps avoid unintentionally plagiarizing the work of original authors. Therefore, the paper below tries to elaborate on providing suitable credit to your readers while writing your work.

The University of Adelaide, under their academic integrity policy, defines integrity as the moral code of academia, and that it comprises the use, generation, and communication of information in an ethical, trust worth, and accountable manner. Therefore, according to the university, giving credit to your work is vital. It enables both the staff and students to formulate academic integrity skills that help provide suitable educational practice (University of Adelaide 2010). Therefore, this policy ensures that all work submitted for evaluation by students is independent and belongs to their origin and or if copied, the original authors are acknowledged appropriately.

Moreover, American Mathematical Society provides a set of guidelines that aids in the protection of trust, respect, and ethics needed for a mathematical scholarship, research, and, most importantly, for the prosperity of science (American Mathematical Society 2019). Therefore, among the guidelines is the major one: mathematical research and its presentation. American Mathematical Society elaborates that exhibition of other individual’s work without acknowledgment is plagiarism and is a serious breach of professional ethics. According to the AMS, accreditation of mathematical results is a crucial aspect since it motivates creativity, and elaborates to the readers the time, place, and the way the original ideas arrived at the system of mathematical though.

Additionally, the University of Adelaide provides the importance of accrediting your work, under the aspect of plagiarism. According to the University of Adelaide (2010), plagiarism is the act of expressing other people’s work in any form, devoid of adequate accreditation or referencing the original resource. Consequently, the university values the importance of avoiding plagiarism to ensure that the work presented to the readers is consistent and suitable (University of Adelaide, 2010). Additionally, the university adds that to avoid plagiarism, you are required to understand and your study and your academic research work; these involve proper summarization and paraphrasing of a given task or acknowledgment of copied work.

Also, in the need and importance of crediting your work to others, Williams and Carroll (2009) narrate the importance of showing the sources used in writing. The most crucial motive to cite sources is to provide evidence and credibility. You have researched particular work on your own and acknowledge when you take the help of other researchers (Williams & Carroll, 2009, p. 59). Accordingly, this will enable the readers to understand the work and its source. Also, citing sources allows readers to trace the job, follow the work’s authority, and look at the relevance of the work (p.60). Therefore, this will help to credit the work and enable readers to have confidence in the work.

In conclusion, from the above illustration, it is evident that giving credit to others on your work is an essential aspect to be considered. Therefore, from the above, it has been worth noting that there are many ways in which providing citations to sources used in writing any work is paramount. Consequently, to be a responsible scholar or researcher, it is core to give credit to other scholars while acknowledging their materials; this will, in turn, uphold ethical issues in writing and also avoid plagiarisms, among others.
