Feasibility of HPWTs for technology-based organizations
The current trend in technology is disrupting the usual workflow design and formation of teams within a workplace. Advance in technology promotes mechanization and automation of various tasks, thus eliminating the need for multiple teams in the workplace. Instead, many employees in technology-based organizations work remotely and independent of other employees. One employee may be responsible for an entire production chain that previously required the presence of several people to operate efficiently. Machines continue to replace humans in high routine manual jobs. Therefore, the contemporary job design does not favor top performance teams but rather individual productivity. Collaboration for productivity among employees in a technology-based organization is minimal since each person focuses on tasks that are highly technical and require massive input in terms of skills. High-performance work teams would not be a feasible framework for the technology-based organization due to its inclination towards team performance and collective productivity.
In technology-based organizations that are evolving for the future, tasks and goals are undertaken by highly skilled individuals rather than teams. Therefore, the introduction of the HPWT will inject bureaucracy that may negatively affect the performance of the employees. For instance, the current boom of artificial intelligence within technology-based organizations requires the functions of highly skilled software developers to come up with systems that optimize the output within the workplace. As technology advances, the need for teams in a workplace reduces since robots and computers take up most of the routine jobs. Therefore, humans are only there to develop software and hardware that can quickly and efficiently perform duties with minimal supervision. People working on technology-based organizations find motivation in innovatively coming up with solutions to problems and tasks. Such people rarely focus on the characteristics of teams since collaboration is minimal. The introduction of HPWTs will only demotivate employees in technological workplaces due to their structured nature.
