Information in Changing Myths in psychological Disorders
The society has a popular myth that seeking mental health assistance exists as a sign of failure. As a result, people fail to seek medical attention. The myth circulating in the society make mentally disturbed individuals believe that they may suffer from stigmas such as anxiety and depression when they attend medical programs. People should understand that lack of visiting mental health experts results in long-term mental disability affecting their performance and productivity. However, the creation of awareness through proper dissemination of useful information to counter myths helps the society to change their negative perceptions on seeking medical attention. People should seek medical attention for mental health the same way they seek for cancer or hypertension health care.
The creation of awareness through information plays an integral role in countering myths of psychological disorders. Positive mental health information allows individuals to realize their full potential, cope with stressful situations in their life, work productively, and making meaningful contributions to society. Effective dissemination of information occurs through repetition, accessibility, and individual awareness of the presence of misinformation in the community (Schwarz et al., 2016, p. 93). Information repetition requires various channels used to disseminate to release coherent and fluent account of the myth, which helps people understand the negative side. Besides, the administration should use a channel accessible to the population.
The information works effectively to counter myths when society has information about the existence of misinformation in society. Countering myths encourages people with psychological disorders to seek medical attention on time. As a result, individuals lead a better healthy life. However, society must work to ensuring that misinformation never exists in community.
