Intelligence and abilities

I identify with the growth mindset and it affects how I feel about intelligence and abilities.  First, this type of mindset requires that someone should keep on striving to improve their abilities, grow, and develop new skills.  Secondly, failures and setbacks provide an opportunity for growth and they are not evidence of the lack of intelligence. It also implies that our abilities and interests can be cultivated because this mindset creates a passion for learning, creativity, and overcoming deficiencies.

From birth to about 3 months, many infants begin to coo, recognize their mother’s voice, and they also towards common voices.  From 3 to 6 months, an infant can easily turn his or her head towards the speaker, laugh, sigh, mimicking and making new sounds. By 12months, a baby can respond to their names, express their moods, play with sounds, and imitate intonation. When the baby is about two years, he can use complete words, put some words together, and at least 25% of their speech can be understood by outsiders.

Interestingly, it is becoming increasingly difficult for human beings to make decisions due to the processes that different parts of the brains go through when making decisions. Usually, the anterior cingulated cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, and ventromedial prefrontal cortex are parts of the brain that are used in making decisions.  They parts respond in different ways and a decision is made depending on them. For instance, they determine is someone will make a decision voluntarily or he is following directions from someone else.  Secondly, it is also becomes difficult to make decisions when choosing between two alternatives. This situation can create anxiety when weighing the value and probability of the two options.

More so, I think that Cattel-Horn-Carrol (CHC) theory of intelligence is the most accurate.  It includes three intelligences.  The crystallized intelligence that represents knowledge and skills acquired, fluid intelligence that relates to ability to solve problems and adapt in unfamiliar situations.  It also includes reading and writing skills, speed of processing, and reaction time.  I think that it is better than other theories because it does not only relate to the acquired knowledge, but also the ability to respond to situations that are not familiar.
