Measuring QOUL in Doha Qatar
The QOUl tool used in Doha Qatar was meant to estimate the environmental qualities that result in personal satisfaction. The satisfaction of residents bases on personal interaction in neighbourhoods and workplaces and their relationship with the environment. The behaviours of individuals based on identifying environmental attributes that trigger people to react the way they do. The research further extends to investigate neighbourhood satisfaction considering the sustainability and livability aspects. Since 2012, Doha experienced rapid growth of population which drastically continues to rise, resulting in a densely populated area. The residents report low QOUL because of congestion in the city. Doha is a city in Qatar where people require value privacy; hence the majority of families prefer to own their homes rather than share rentals which continues to lower relationships between the residents. Privacy led to an increased number of personal vehicles that increases congestion, thus more pollution, just like the rest of urban life. The study is based on a behavioural survey to identify people who chose a private lifestyle.
Methods used
With the hypothesis selected, a field survey was conducted consisting of distributing paper questionnaires in schools. The study chose using a paper questionnaire because fewer people participate In an online survey; thus, only a few responses are received, which may result in collecting inaccurate data. Furthermore, few people are always online; hence the study may not capture the required group. Questionnaires were distributed In schools where students were supposed to seek help from parents in answering the questions. A total of five schools received two hundred questionnaires each in which the questions covered gender, age, level of education and profession.
Findings and solution
From the survey, student’s feedback offered a total of five hundred responses enough to measure the QUOL of Doha. According to the answers, the majority enjoy the urban environment; however, few concerns were raised about insecurities in the region. In terms of location, most of the homestead is located near the city and health care facilities since at times the environment gets polluted enough to affect individuals with respiratory problems. However, few people are unsatisfied with their living areas which lack clinics and recreational areas. Amenities located further from homesteads tend to serve few people leaving a wider group unsatisfied, thus concluding that Doha reports a low-quality life. To solve their problem, urban planners should reconstruct more amenities to serve neighbourhoods. Similarly, planners should concern themselves at improving security in residential areas to increase residential satisfaction.
Measuring QOUL in Turkey
Measuring QOL is an issue that sparkled many kinds of research and is still practised as urbanization continues to spread globally. In Istanbul Turkey, researchers measure the QoL using indicators such as income earned, expenditure rates and availability of resources and amenities. The regions that respondrespond to having all resources records high-qualityhigh-quality life as settlers become satisfied with amenities presents. It means that people do not struggle seeking services however, expenditure rates and income earned may differ their satisfaction. The differences are as a result of different employment opportunities that pay their employees varying wages. For a person paid less and lives in an urbanized area, most complain of expenditure rates because they lack enough income. As a result, people are forced to move into poor houses to minimize expenditure rates. In this study, research consider the social economic structure to determine the quality of life in Istanbul.
Methods used
To determine how people live and adapt to the environment, a Kano model survey was conducted in four Istanbul neighborhoods. The objective of research aimed at collecting data concerning peoples view on their living environment. The research concerned visiting different housing environment to collect varying data as settles experience different environments depending on their lifestyle. Using this model offers different answers which are used for comparison purposes to estimate the average QOUL of Istanbul residents. Additionally, the survey targeted collecting data on environmental factors that satisfied a larger group of Turkey settlers and the demographic structures of turkey that differentiated people’s lifestyles.
Findings and solutions
According to the research, to satisfy turkey settlers, planners need to build more amenities that serve people equally especially learning institutions and medical hospitals. Similarly, there is a need to reduce congestion in urban neighborhood as people increase since people claim that increase in population results to crime cases. In terms of the living environment, those living in poor houses record a lower QUOL because they cannot afford to sustain themselves resulting to the increase of slums in the area. Poor housing causes health issues a factors that triggers the growth on different regions across Turkey. Lack of such factors leave people unsatisfied forcing the majority to migrate back to rural areas. However, since 2012, the population in Turkey is increasing while planners continue to build urban regions extending to rural areas. Therefore, most rural areas developed satisfying those who would wish to live in urbanized regions but dissatisfied people living below the poverty line as lurbanized life became much expensive for them.
