Interest in civil engineering
As the world is rapidly growing and evolving, so is the demand for better infrastructures. The pressure from population growth is ever-increasing, and with challenges like global warming, civil engineers can help play a significant role in designing efficient structures. I am always attracted to this field because I like the idea that it can help shape the world into a better place and meet the rising demand. Since I was young, I have always hoped for a changing but rewarding career and makes me feel useful to the community. When growing up, I was immersed in a word defined by civil engineering and constructions. I had a close relative who made me feel determined to follow his path. Being brought up in a family whose major business was construction, I have witnessed incredible things that can be gained through better-conceived engineering projects. Out of this influence, I am determined to make positive contributions by entering into a civil engineering career.
Academically, my interest in science has always been enormous, and this comes from an intellectual dimension. I love solving problems and challenges that come with the successful completion of projects. During my previous academic experience, I realized my interests lay deep in math and physic concepts. What I have come to see most complex is to relate what is taught in the classroom with real-world events, which stirred even more desire to navigate civil engineering. The field has an appeal of challenges, and this presents me with the opportunity to theoretically tackle problems and apply solutions practically for beneficial impact or the society around me.
I am continually looking for opportunities to gain more knowledge during my free time and make me an active student. For instance, I have participated in engineering conferences and talks. Doing that has placed me in a good position to develop insights into this profession. Participating in such events has influenced my interest in civil engineering even more and in different aspects. For example, currently, I am fascinated by the area of materials used in construction works. Specifically, I am intrigued in how materials are chosen based on factors like cost.
Besides my extensive involvement in civil engineering works in different community settings, including my Uncle’s workshop, I have had work placements for three months at an established construction company. The position enabled me to learn a different aspect of construction, including working with survey teams. I enjoyed most working on-site since I learned more about factors taken into consideration during large-scale projects.
My interest in civil engineering would be much influenced by teamwork mastery, and Cornell University is handy because it is a culturally diverse community. Thus, the school has a welcoming environment that will enable me to interact with individuals from different cultures and, even better, get to exchange ideas, share knowledge or information. As I share my culture, the school allows me to learn from others as well. Aside from the skills and knowledge that the University will provide me, I believe that there is a great avenue of personal growth. As such, I will not only succeed in the chosen career but also enrich as an individual- the most important thing. Given the reputation of this University, I am confident that if I get a chance to take up the engineering program, I will be competent in the engineering field and well-disclaimed character.
