Leading civility in the workplace

Civility has been defined as authentic respect for other people that requires willingness, presence, and time to engage in a genuine discussion and intention to seek and arrive at a common ground. Civility is crucial since it involves treating others with respect, communicating effectively, creating high-functional teams, and building community. The video by Creighton University (2013) is a good conflict scenario demonstrating acts of incivility in a group of health professionals. From the video, the nurses holding the conference are not giving their maximum concentration with behavior such as texting, gossiping, unwillingness to assist the patient, and too much distracted with heavy signs of boredom.
Civility and collaboration impact both the students and the nurse in the nursing profession. Acting in a civil and respecting manner is not an essay thing, especially when the nurse is working in a stressful environment. One of the significant impacts of civility and collaboration of both the nurse and the students is that communication is achieved; mutual respect and productive results are also attained (American Nurses Association, 2004). By acting civil and collaborating, great opportunities are obtained, and both the student and the nurse can even understand each other without conflicting. Furthermore, through civility and collaboration, both the student and the nurse can deliver high-quality care to the patients, which would otherwise be difficult to achieve.
In a team of health professionals, a nurse plays a significant role in collaborating with other members to plan for patient care. A nurse is therefore expected to air his or her opinion, agree or disagree with others based on what is the best care that the patient should be given. Apart from that, the nurse also works closely with other specialists to monitor the patient’s health condition and ensure that the patient receives comprehensive care (The Joint Commission, 2008). Therefore, the nurse is expected to work civilly while on the team by listening to others and respecting other people’s opinions. Also, a nurse’s role in the team is to present to the team a comprehensive report of the behavior of the patient, how they patient is taking his or her medication and how the patient is responding to the treatment being administered to him or her.
