How to Become a Criminologist.

For one to become a criminologist, one must study criminology. Criminology is a branch of sociology that uses data to understand crime, learn causes of crime committed, how the crime can be prevented in the future, information that might be needed to solve a crime and the society’s response to crime. After graduation, you might need to work as an intern or volunteer in some organizations. Voluntary services and internships help a graduate to gain the first-hand experience in the field as well as build their portfolio. Government organization such as the police department, the justice system, and the surveillance department is a great start. Non-governmental organizations involved in victim support and rehabilitation, advocacy, and public education can also be internship centres for criminologists. Depending on your location, you might be required to acquire a license before you begin to practice criminology.

Criminology being a social science one is required to have specific skills and qualities. Skills such as written and communication are necessary. Observation skills are also paramount as your job is to study crime patterns. Research and analytical thinking skills are also required to become a criminologist. To become a criminologist, you need to have a deep interest in human nature and behaviour. Understanding society and culture should always be reevaluated as society changes. One must also possess high levels of ethics, integrity and should be able to be objective when analyzing evidence. Also, to become a criminologist, one must be persistent, determined, and be able to pay keen attention to details. Having a broad understanding of the law and legal knowledge is also a requirement. However, a particular area of specialization can be advantageous. Since research and criminology go hand in hand, one is required to have technological knowledge.
