Sherlock and Watson
It is so astonishing to find out that there are people who do not have any interest in astronomy. Some are so disinterested to such an extent that they do not accept that the Earth often revolves around the sun. Such people do not want to think beyond their knowledge or dig out more information to find out more concerning the things that happen around them. It is hard to believe that some people are not interested in looking at the world from that angle, and generally not interested in science at all. These people are not interested in reasoning. No one would ever imagine that such a person exists until they are introduced to Arthur Conan Doyle’s “A Study in Scarlet.” In the story, DR. John H. Watson met and shared an apartment with Sherlock Holmes. Watson was surprised when he found out that Holmes does not know anything concerning the fact that the Earth undergoes the process of revolution, where it revolves around the sun.
Holmes was not only unaware of this fact, but even after he was informed, he perceived the information as devoid of value, which he intends to forget completely. This brings out the fact that Holmes was indeed a stubborn geocentric. He is different from Holmes, the detective who believed in reason and observation, or science in general. People in the world of science should not forget about Holmes and the attitude that he had towards the field. For many people, including the intelligent ones, the likes of astronomy compromise useless information, which does not have any bearing in their works and lives. These pragmatically-minded smart people are always around, and they do not consider that it is inadequate to express that they are not interested in knowledge because they find it irrelevant and useless.
Just like Holmes, these people are often disinclined to heed to such a valuable knowledge specifically when they feel that the knowledge crowds into what they already know, and find useful, relevant, and essential. Even if these people are required to understand particular concepts for practical reasons, they are just like Holmes and the attitude that he has presented. They have a high chance of trying to forget the ideas that they learned afterward. Therefore, Holmes shows that the rejection of and disinterest in astronomy, as well as the other aspects of science, should not portray someone’s sense of unreasoning and unthinking. Holmes challenges people who deal with astronomy and the ones who think that people have a common interest in astronomy.
