Health Promotion Discussion 1
Q#1: Emerging population Health Issues difference
African Americans are among the emerging populations in the United States with health issues that differ from other minority groups like the Latinos. Among the healthcare issues that differ between these two groups includes healthcare seeking behaviours. African Americans have unhealthy healthcare behaviours, such as excessive smoking and drinking alcohol, which affects their health. Also, these behaviours contribute to the risk of heart conditions as health issues among blacks more as compared to the Latinos (Buchmueller & Levy, 2020).
Moreover, chronic conditions and poverty are among the healthcare problems that affect African Americans more than Latinos. These conditions include cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other diseases resulting from a lack of appropriate health behaviours such as good diets. The Latinos also have HIV/AIDS health issues differing significantly from the African American. In this case, blacks have an increased number of new HIV infections than Latinos because of an increased risk of sexual behaviours.
Q#2: Roots of Public Health Nursing and its influence on today’s practice
The roots of Public Health Nursing influenced the practice in the modern days concerning healthcare service delivery. The traditional healthcare reforms in the early 1900s contributed significantly to contemporary public health elements. For instance, healthcare inequalities are one of the issues that influenced the practice today such that there is a need to have everyone accessing healthcare services despite their race and other discriminatory factors. Also, the necessity for better healthcare services contributed to today’s public health. The focus is on having patients receive quality services and have healthcare that can resolve complex healthcare issues. Lastly, inclusivity and increasing access to primary healthcare to communities also is a historical event that contributed to public healthcare in the modern days. For instance, marginalized communities such as LGBTQ had the backup and advocacy of the healthcare professions for better healthcare services (Wood, 2020).
