Two spirits people
After reading the Caizzi article and viewing the video about the two spirits, I think the decision to accept the two spirits in the native traditions was more radical than the decision which was made by the court in the case of Hall. According to the video, the people of the two spirits are those who have more than one gender. In the native traditions, the people were embraced in society and believed to have the power to perform multiple roles, for instance, in counseling, giving insights, and matchmaking. In the case of Hall, the decision of the court was not radical as it required him to half dress as a man from the neck to the legs and then put on feminine attires from the neck to the head. Hall felt uncomfortable is this was not a sign of acceptance in the community.
The decision of the court in Halls’s case was not an embrace of the third gender. The kind of attire prescribed raised questions on everyone who came across him concerning his gender. He was a center of attraction to everyone as they were curious to know his specific gender. A fair decision could have been arrived at by the court if it concluded that he dressed in clothes that signified one gender identity. The court exposed his confusing gender state by dictating that he should put on garments worn by men from the neck to the toes and those worn by women from the neck to the head.consequently, the court did not embrace a third gender in its decision and hence an example of enslaving work.
After the court’s decision, I think that Hall felt humiliated and in another form of prison. The fashion he would start dressing in was embarrassing and made him feel out of place and unaccepted.
