The Making of Modern America
Great Depression Major Causes
This Great Depression was so huge that t affected not only the United States, but it also affected other countries. First, the Stock market crash of the year 1929 was one of the main causes of depression. The stock market prices plunged on October 24th, and this frightened the before of the outcomes. A total of $40 billion was lost by the stockholders in a span of 2 months. The stock still regained some of the losses, but they were not enough to make a change.
The second cause was the failure of the banks. Most of the people lost their savings in their accounts. Also, there was no insurance on the bank deposits. Most of the banks closed, but those that could access the bank had their loans decreased. The expenditure increased and it made the situation even worse.
The other cause was then policy on purchasing and economical. The spending of the money stopped because no one had jobs since layoffs happened in the masses. The people who had opted to pay through installments their staffs were being taken away. The investments became so worthless, and the economy could not keep up. Taxes on imports also increased.
New Deal Address’s Problems of the Great Depression
There are many ways the New Deal sort of solving the problem, an example being the following,
Relief
The Americans suffered, and they became unemployed. The FDR set organizations that could help the unemployed. The Work Progress Administration (WPA) and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) provided for many of them work to do. A law was also enacted in the year 1935 that was set to provide financial help to the retires, and the unemployed people with disabilities called the Social Security Act.
Recovery
There were assigned restrictions that were set in a part of the Agriculture adjustment. Farmers were paid for them to plant crops, and the profit was to rise. FDR, they sat down and rewrote the law so that the courts doubt to rest.
Reform
This Great Depression made sure that such a crisis would not happen again. Therefore, Emergency legislation makes people feel better about their banking situations. The Federal Reserve also made a set up of the banking system in order for the confidence to be restored.
Cold War Tensions
Effect of Arms Race
The United States, Britain, and the USSR were ready to make the war come to an end. The United States was allying with the USSR; they dropped two bombs without telling them. This made the USSR question their friendship, and the USSR began making their own weapons to keep up, and this brought a rivalry between them, and it led to the arms race that increased the tension of the cold war.
Differing Ideologies
The United States and the USSR had different ideas on national security plans,
The United States- They believed that we should act upon the constitutional rights of freedom. Freedom consisted of freedom of speech, press, and elections. They were capitalists.
The Soviet Union- They had control over the people, and the people had no freedom; they believed in communism. Everything was government property.
American Culture and Domestic Policies.
The Cold war lasted for 45years; it caused a lot of tension. The American culture and the Domestic Policies took the brunt of the tensions and the changes that would come about. The Americans feared the communism (WGU 2016). Their lives and careers got ruined. Even the Children also got affected as they had drilled in school n how to respond in case of a nuclear attack.
Feminist Movement
The organization (NOW) National Organization for Women was set up in 1966, which petitioned for equal rights. The organization grew over the years, and it made an impact on the women’s movement. (Norton,2015). Women began gaining freedom. Contraceptives came along, and also the unwanted pregnancies decreased in numbers.
Also, in the workforce, the women begun doing the same work as men and also getting paid the way men were being paid.
