HCO’s Strategic Plan- Mayo Clinic

My chosen healthcare organization to address in this paper is Mayo Clinic- an American not-for-profit, academic medical facility. The organization is based in three major locations: Minnesota, Florida, and Arizona (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research [MFMER], 2020). Mayo Clinic is the best choice as a place I would want to work in the future. The organization’s unique culture makes it conducive, where the atmosphere is collegial and mission-focused in the best interest of patients. Based on feedback from professionals working in this organization, the workforce is genuinely interested, not just helping patients but also co-workers. Patient privacy is well protected, and various departments work to solve any rising matters. While in this organization, I will work with top physicians- who make guidelines for other professionals in the US. The benefits of working with a senior professional in the field are numerous, including gaining of horning skills and confidence in consultations.

Organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values

The mission of Mayo Clinic is to inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to all patients via an integrated clinical practice, education, and research.

Vision: – Mayo Clinic will provide an Unparallel experience as the most trusted partner for health care (Pruthi et al., 2015).The organization’s values guide the mission of Mayo Clinic to its daily practice, and they express vision as well as the intent of the founders. The values include:

  • Respect- Organization members are required to treat all people in a diverse community with dignity (Pruthi et al., 2015).)
  • Compassion- Professionals must provide the best care by treating patients and families with empathy (Pruthi et al., 2015).
  • Healing- Members are required to inspire hope and cultivate the whole person, respecting spiritual, emotional and physical needs (Pruthi et al., 2015).
  • Teamwork- Contribution of all must be valued, skills blended in a unique collaboration (Pruthi et al., 2015).
  • Integrity- Individuals are required to adhere to the highest professional standards, personal responsibility, ethics and worthy of the trust placed by patients upon the organization
  • Stewardship- As a professional, professionals must sustain organization’s mission (Pruthi et al., 2015).
  • Innovation- Professionals should energize the organization and enhance lives of people served (Pruthi et al., 2015).
  • Excellence- When delivering care, it should be done for the best outcomes and high-quality services through effort dedication (Pruthi et al., 2015).

Organization’s Purpose and Priorities

From the organization’s strategic plan, the Mayo Clinic healthcare system has a purpose and commitment to creating a caring environment while it ensures that people’s differences are valued. The company’s mission is to acknowledge both patients and employees. Therefore, to realize this purpose, the organization has outlined various goals, including delivering care and creating awareness, care for the community, welcome everyone, opportunity balancing, talent development, and pursuing health equity. From this, I think Mayo Clinic’s purpose and focus are better defined through the identification of goals. The organization’s central vision cannot be realized with clear goals. To create a welcoming environment for diverse patients, the organization has strategic priorities that will make the future of healthcare. The focus includespaying attention to serious health issues- a challenge in the community, like cancer. Other priorities include expanding capital and advancing diagnostics. Inspired by the passion for helping, the organization is building a future medicine by revolutionizing care in the various facilities.

Mission Statement and HCO Competing Organizations

For a mission statement to separate an organization from other competition entities, it must convey something unique. The mission is the key marketing tool for any organization as it captures brand positioning and helps stand apart from competitors. The mission of the Mayo Clinic healthcare organization does communicate and separate it from competing organizations by clearly defining the market, its contribution, and its distinction. What makes Mayo Clinic exceptional in the market is the ability to integrate clinical practice, education, and research (Pang, et al., 2015). People want to trust that services provided by an organization are effective and the way to believe so is basing the organizational approach to service provision on research work. Not many healthcare facilities have managed to incorporate research and education in clinical practices effectively. However, some like Mayo Clinic takes advantage of technology to enhance evidence-based care delivery. From the mission statement, Mayo Clinic has been able to distinguish itself from competitors by emotionally appealing to clients. The organization has aimed to be inspirational, and this helps builds a bond with customers. The way in which the organization’s mission does this is by mentioning inspiration on hope to patients. Alongside this, I would add the idea of making the mission statement show a sense of diversity inclusion. In that way, it will communicate the focus and priorities of the organization is to serve diversity. Thus, instead of using the word every patient, I would recommend replacement with all patients. In that, the mission will make sense of diversity inclusiveness form the sound of it.

Current Vision Statement and the HCO’s Path

Vision statement of Mayo Clinic does not clearly describe the organization’s path while implementing a strategic plan. The vision state that Mayo Clinic will offer unparalleled experience as the most trusted healthcare partner. From this statement, there is no indication of how the strategic plan to achieve that will be implemented. However, the mission statement does give an overview of the direction the organization will take to attain the vision. For example, the mission informs that Mayo Clinic will utilize a unified clinical practices, education, and research. From this, it is notable that the direction towards attaining unparalleled experience is via research and education.

However, the vision statement can be used to motivate the workforce in the organization. Typically, one of the reasons why most healthcare professionals stick and appreciate their workplaces is experience earned. Experience is the number one motivator in the workplace, and this makes many professionals, myself included to be in places where there are opportunities to learn. Work experience comes with job satisfaction and the overall meeting organizational goals. In the healthcare setting, like in the Mayo Clinic healthcare system, professional experience is of great value to impacting the lives of patients. Professionals will be motivated to work where the level of experience is considered, enhanced, and appreciated. The vision of this organization advocate experience that will make the organization a most trusted healthcare partner. The vision can be used to remind workers that experience matters, and through cultivation, professionals are motivated to consult, share knowledge and ideas. In the process, professionals interact with each other and patients, promoting a culture of a positive relationship.

Current Values Statement and Values of Multiple Participants

To recall a few of Mayo Clinic’s values, they include respect, integrity, compassion, and teamwork. Every member of an organization wants to be treated with respect to personal values, and this requires leaders to align organizational values with those of individuals. Personal values are what people are in true life but not what they would like or thought to be. In this way, essential thing organizational leaders consider in value creation is identifying personal core values. For example, respect is one of the many values people have, and this can be promoted through organizational policy, rule, or practices. Mayo Clinic, as a healthcare organization, takes consideration of people’s value, and by this, it outlines respect among the most critical virtue that ought to be observed by members. When attending to patients or relating with other stakeholders, portraying the level of respect is of great importance to the organization as well as individuals. Delivering care to hurting patients or families is required to be based on empathy, one of the great value stipulate din the organization’s statement. Organization participants have varying needs as they range from employees to customers, all of whom have diverse needs. Mayo Clinic’s value statement takes account of this by requiring members to treat everyone with level integrity, respect, and deliver the best outcomes through dedication.

Rewording the Current Value Statement

Reflecting on the priorities of Mayo Clinics’ strategic plan, the values statement that I would reword are innovation, stewardship, excellence, and compassion. Under innovation, I would state that the origination value innovative work infused by clinical experts. In excellence, the organization is dedicated to delivering quality service through the collaborative work of professionals and patients in clinical trials. With that, the value statement appreciates the focus on clinical trials that the organization is set to conduct per year. To incorporate the priority of cancer effort, the value statement of compassion would change to treating patients and families with sensitive empathy to impact life for critically ill patients. In stewardship, professionals in the organization sustain its mission by managing resources and build the future of medicine that is inspired by a passion for helping. Rewording this value in that way will reflect the organization’s priority in capital expansion.
