Internet Censorship[A1] [A2]
Internet censorship is the general control over the free flow of information from people to the internet by regulation bodies. The regulatory bodies such as organizations or individual groups may decide to censor information flowing over the internet due to some factors. These factors may include fear of going against the societal norms, moral decay, to protect their business and, even the fear of the general consequences of breaking the laws that govern a given society.[A3]
Use of Internet Censorship
The use of internet censorship varies from country to country, depending on every citizen’s democratic rights. Some democratic countries initiate very moderate internet censorship. Other countries prefer to completely prohibit the public against the free flow of information to the internet, especially when the country is anticipating some special events. The events such as elections can cause chaos to erupt within the state. The government initiates internet censorship to prevent sensitive information from reaching the public through the internet (Goldberg & Erica 2016). This sensitive information can be inciting to the public hence resulting in more chaos. Internet censorship prevents different groups of people from regrouping to protest against certain events in a given society. The North Africa Arab protests and riots resulted in the removal of leaders. The internet censorship prevents the defamations: this is the damaging information peddled against an individual. Internet censorship protects obscene material from reaching the public. The materials that include pornographic can get to children under age, causing moral decay and massive erosion of the societal norms. Internet censorship protects underage children from accessing such obscene material from the internet. Internet censorship can prevent harassment against an individual, especially if the information disseminated on the internet goes against human rights, such as sexual harassment and freedom of every citizen in a particular country. Internet censorship protects publishers’, content creators ‘and writers’ work from theft; this encourages creativity, innovation, and originality from different people.
Advantages Of Internet Censorship
Internet censorship prevents cons from accessing personal data such as medical records, social security numbers, and bank statements. If cons access these data, they can blackmail a person with intentions of extortion. Internet censorship protects a vulnerable population from exploitation, sexual abuse, and substance abuse. Internet censorship protects a young community that consists of children under age from such information, causing moral decay within the society. Internet censorship is a security tool. Information such as a personal schedule creates room for burglary. Robbers can easily access the private residence to steal if they get to know through social media that the house owner is out on vacation. Internet censorship prevents false information from reaching the public through the internet. This information can be fake or damaging. The use of counterfeit voices and edited videos can make the information that is phony look real.[A4]
Disadvantages Of Internet Censorship
Internet censorship limits the flow of business ideas to the media, which defines innovation and creativity. The consumption of unique ideas is within a limited area. The restricted area creates a vacuum between the content creators and consumers of the information. Internet censorship provides a platform for poor governance, especially where a given state imposes extreme censorship to prevent information from reaching the population. Those who go against laws are arrested and imprisoned[A5] [A6].[A7]
