Wrestling
I had never got hurt in wrestling before in high school until I came across a varsity wrestler who was a weight class below me. Everyone feared having to practice with him. This wrestler hand been wrestling from his early childhood, whereby he came from a family of state competition. I believe he as well had psychological issues. At the same time, this wrestler studied and practiced in aggressive techniques that went far beyond the typical skills learned by the wrestling team, especially in the manipulation of pressure points to hurt and demoralize his opponents. I believe wrestling gave him the chance to exercise his malice in a controlled environment, even to his teammates during practice. So, my most dangerous experience was having to be this wrestler’s practice dummy during a practice match. He used his techniques to deliberately break my leg, which called for the game’s quick closure. However, I learned how to ignore the pain at the moment. Besides, I had little knowledge at the moment to know that the kind of injury that had been subjected to would have a significant negative impact on the rest of my life.
Later on, after the exercise, my leg developed severe pains such that I had to be admitted to the hospital for further inspection, whereby I had to undergo open reduction and internal fixation type of surgery to treat my broken shin bone. My family had to incur a lot of money for my hospital bills for the operation. Besides, I had to suspend my learning since I could not even attempt to walk during this time.
Although I successfully underwent surgery, it was out of my expectations that several complications would accompany it. I had hoped to resume my learning process as soon as possible to walk on my feet. I began to realize that my feet had lost sensation. After further consultation with my doctor, unfortunately, he delivered the worst information that I never expected to get from him. During Open reduction and internal fixation surgery, my nerves were damaged, which is why I experienced numbness in my feet. This completely changed my view of high school sports. However, I was given several medications to try and bring my feet back to their normal condition. Unfortunately, my feet’s normal condition was never achieved entirely up to date.
From my experience, some wrestlers forego wrestling to deliberately enfeeble an opponent with superior strength, skill, leverage, knowledge, determination, and sometimes luck. However, I was never trained on the team to deliberately cause injuries that will lead to excessive or unnecessary pain. My life changed due to a cold and calculating sadist to whom wrestling provided him a chance to practice his malice within a controlled and a protected environment even to his teammates in practice. By indicating this, I am not trying to imply that wrestling is a wrong type of sport. Wrestling is controlled violence, and its main objective is to defeat the opponent with superior strength, skills, or experience. Therefore, I urge that wrestlers should know and adhere strictly to the rules of the game. Besides, every participant needs to follow the coach’s directions to minimize the opportunities of putting the participants into risk injuries.
