A DOLL’S HOUSE
The author of this play “ADoll’s House,” Isben, trying to describe a clear picture of the role held by the women of all economic classes in the society. Generally, the female character in the play is represented by Nora clearly shown in chapter three where there is an indication that men are difficult to sacrifice their integrity. The game also tries to teach the importance of parental duties and responsibilities, especially to their children. For instance, a character by the name Dr. Rank in the play is believed to have a disease which is as a result of his fathers’ immorality, and he also passed the same disease to his son there causing them to undergo sufferings because of his fathers’ misdeeds.
The play also gives a brief explanation of the obligation of children to take care of their parents in society. In simple terms, the writer describes that role and responsibilities in families are like reciprocal. Another clear idea in the play is the issue of unreliable appearance. Different characters are shown to have different characteristics in the course of the game. In this play, many aspects were involved. However, some are principal performers, and others are antagonists.
Nora appears first as the main character in the play. She is also the wife of Helmer. In the genesis of the story, the writer describes Noras’ role as being playful like somebody who does not have any worldly experience. But in the course of the play, she is however seen to gain intelligence which helps her to be free from being oppressed. Helmer, husband to Nora also appeared to be among the main characters in this play. Some of the actions that helped him to dominate in the sport are; when he was promoted to the new position in the bank and he felt the pleasure that was equal to his place of authority as a home husband. Helmer is also more concerned about his status quo in the society just because of the position he was granted, and he only looks at respect and fear to him by his members of the community.
Krogstad is identified in the play as a lawyer who went to school with Torvald Helmer, but he is holding a lower rank at Torvald’s bank. He actual has desires to protect his children from rejection by using false ways. Other characters in the play are Mrs. Linde- Noras’ childhood friend and Dr. Rank- Helmers’ best friend who was always unconcerned with what others taught of him. Antagonists in this play are; Helmer and Nora children including Bob, Emmy, and Ivar. They are seen as not taking many parts in the building of the play. Other dormant characters in the play are Anne Marie who was Helmers nanny, but the writer did not develop most of his contributions to the play. Lastly, Noras’ father is also mentioned as a character, but unfortunately, he died before the play started.
After looking very keen at the writers’ narration of this play, the first five characters deserve to be mentioned as major characters in the play. I had discussed their specific contributions in the play with great emphasis when I was comparing with those of the last three characters. Even though the writer of this play was clear and open especially in overlooking the real reflection of what takes place in our societies today, I still get challenged by some issues. First, are all men in our societies not ready to sacrifice their integrity? Secondly, is it really that parental care determines a Childs ‘future behavior? What is the role of the world in teaching values to children in our societies today?
