Background/history on why you are doing the research
The Obis is a new diet aimed at healing individuals struggling to lose weight through weight loss plans. Given the WHO estimates of the population affected by obesity, it is imperative to come up with a new diet that is effective and affordable. Based on WHO statistics, over 1.9 billion adults i.e., 18 and above, were overweight in 2016 (World Health Organization, 2020). In the same year, 39 percent of men and 40 percent of women were obese. Overall, nearly 13 percent of the global adult population were overweight in 2016. The global number of obese persons tripled from 1975 to 2016.
Forty million children below five years in 2018 were obese in 2018 (World Health Organization, 2020). Initially viewed as an advanced country problem, obesity is on the rise in middle and low-income countries, especially in urban settings. The percentage of children below five years who are obese in Africa has risen by almost 50 percent since 2000 (World Health Organization, 2020). Similarly, 50 percent of children below 5 were obese or overweight in Asia in 2018. The prevalence of obesity and overweight among adolescents and children increased significantly in 2016. Obesity and overweight are associated with more deaths globally than obese.
The fundamental cause of overweight and obesity is an energy imbalance of calories consumed. Around the world, there has been a rise in physical inactivity because of the sedentary nature of types of works, increasing urbanization, and changing means of transportation. There is also a high consumption of energy-dense foods high in sugars and fat.
The health consequences of obesity and overweight cause cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart disease, which has been the primary cause of death over the years. Obesity is linked to musculoskeletal disorders and cancers, including breast, kidney, liver, ovarian, endometrial, and colon. Child obesity is related to disability in adulthood and premature death (World Health Organization, 2020). Overweight children experience the risk of fractures, breathing difficulties, psychological effects, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and insulin resistance.
The food sector can significantly help in promoting healthy diets by ensuring that nutritious and healthy choices are affordable and available to all consumers.
Objectives
i). Providing a low carb diet ideal for people with obesity
The Obis diet help individuals lose excess weight while consuming as much fat and protein as they like while avoiding foods with high carbs. Studies in the past have revealed that diets low in carb without calories are effective for weight reduction and results in improved health. The Obis diet will be promoted and popularized globally through social media, books, etc. It is anticipated that the Obis diet will attract criticisms from the leading health authorities because of its high content of saturated fat. Nevertheless, new studies show that it is harmless to consume saturated fats.
We have studied the Obis diet and established that it leads to more significant improvements in blood sugar and more weight loss. It improves HDL cholesterol (HDL), and other health markers. Despite its high-fat content, the Obis diet does not increase LDL cholesterol (bad)on average. The primary reason why low calories diets in general, such as the Obi diet, are so successful in weight loss is that increased protein intake and a reduction in carbs cause little appetite. As such, the person consumes fewer calories most of the time.
ii). Providing a four-phase plan
The Obis diet will comprise of four phases:
Phase 1 induction: For two weeks, less than 20 grams of carbs are consumed daily. Eat high protein, high fat, with leafy vegetables to kick start loss of weight
Phase 2 balancing: gradually add low-carb vegetables, more nuts, and fruits
Phase 3 fine-tuning: once close to achieving the weight goals, more carbs are to be added to the diet till weight loss gradually slows down
Phase 4 maintenance: eat a lot of health carbs since the body can tolerate without adding weight
iii). Identifying food to avoid and eat
The Obis diet discourages soft drinks: cakes, ice cream, candy, etc. Trans fats should be kept at bay, including processes foods, especially those labeled hydrogenated. Food to eat includes meats, nuts and seed, low carb vegetables, healthy fats, eggs, seafood and fatty fish, full-fat dairy, etc.
