A Reflective Essay on Yoga Training
Nurses and other clinicians should sharpen their ability to engage in training sessions that are critical in quality service delivery. The training important because it not only sharpen the skills of the trainee but also ensures that the audience gets access to health-related training that improves the quality of life. To sharpen teaching skills, I engaged in a micro-teaching session and made a 10 minutes video on yoga. The reflective essay provides an account of the training session and how it is important using the Gibbs reflective cycle. Detailed analysis of the description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and action plans are described.
The selected topic for the micro-teaching session in the 10 minutes video is yoga. The selected topic is an important relaxation technique that creates a perfect harmony between the body and the mind. It is essential in the union of individual consciousness. The other health benefits of yoga include maintenance of a balanced metabolism, reduction of weight, an improvement in athletic performance, and protection from injury. I like yoga because of the stated health benefits.
The Gibbs Reflective Cycle
The Gibbs reflective cycle is essential in giving my account of the experience that I had while making the micro-teaching video on the essential yoga poses. One of the benefits of using Gibb’s cycle theory is because it is critical in capturing my feelings about the entire process (Dhaliwal, 2018). Through the cycle, I managed to learn about my strengths and weaknesses in teaching the Yoga session.
Description
For effective teaching of the relaxation skill, I selected a quiet room with proper lighting. I had a training mat ready and my training gear on to facilitate the teaching process. Putting on training gear and having a training mat ready was essential in giving the viewer an idea of the requirements of Yoga training sessions. During the session, I had my trainer present and he helped me with recording the video on the basic yoga poses. On this day, my trainer did not provide any slightest teaching related to the various Yoga poses since the training session was entirely mine.
Some of the Yoga poses that I taught in the video include the mountain pose that is essential in teaching individuals to stand with steadiness. I also provided teaching related to the tree pose that is important in giving the learners a sense of grounding. The downward-facing dog pose was also taught in the training session as it is important in stretching the hamstrings and chest as well as lengthening the spine. I also taught about the cobra pose and the Sukhansa pose that are important in the meditation. During the session, I offered relevant precautions that the learners should take when doing the basic Yoga poses.
Feeling
While providing the Yoga training session, I was so thrilled because I knew that I was providing new ideas to my audience. One of the reasons why I was thrilled to take part in the training session is because I realized that I had gained significant confidence in recording videos. I did not know that I would develop such a high level of confidence to record a video on a yoga training session. I also felt excited because I was making great progress in my Yoga class.
One of the thoughts that ran in my mind while conducting the training session was the opinion of the audience. I felt that in case I made a mistake, the audience would criticize me. However, I realized that criticism is part of the learning process and it would help me in improving. My emotions, believes, and values greatly impacted the success of the training session because I got nearly all the yoga poses right as I reviewed the video.
Regarding the feelings of the audience, I understood that not all of them will like the training session. I understood that some of the audience would appreciate the provided teachings whereas others would offer criticism. The expected mixed feelings of the audience made it possible for me to believe in myself and provide the best out of the Yoga pose training session. While viewing the training video afterward, I realized that I had put significant effort into realizing its success. As stated, I got all the yoga poses right.
Evaluation
The evaluation of the yoga training session is important. In the training session, I felt good about the idea of getting all the basic poses right in the teaching session. I had been training for some time and I was certain that I would record some success during the training. However, I did not feel good about the fact that only settled for the easier yoga poses because of the fear of criticism. I never tried the complex yoga poses although I had trained on them. I really feared to fail while trying.
Although the training regarding the performed yoga poses went well, I was quite concerned about the failure to perform the poses that I deemed complex. I felt that failing to train my audience on yoga poses such as boat pose and triangle pose contributed negatively especially to the audience who would have been interested in them. My instructor equally emphasized the importance of performing all the basic yoga poses. He stated that avoiding some of the poses in the training video set the wrong precedence to the audience.
Analysis
I feel that the training session went well for the basic yoga poses that I had settled on. While watching the video, I realized that all the poses were perfect. However, my conscience was not clear because I had failed to perform other yoga poses because I felt that they were difficult. I felt that I was exploring the easy way out by avoiding the other two basic poses. The self-determination theory lacked during the training session and I feel that it is the primary reason why I did not try out the other poses (Menard, Bott & Crossler, 2017). I realize that I was tasked with the responsibility of inspiring my audience to choose yoga, a responsibility that I did not perform as expected because I lacked determination. Through the use of the self-determination theory, I feel that I would have acted differently and trained my audience on the other complex yoga poses. Boosting my level of confidence and determination would have significantly helped in improving things as far as the training in the complex yoga poses is concerned.
Conclusion
From the teaching session, I have learned that I have exemplary teaching skills and I can positively impact the learning exercise. I draw this conclusion from the success that I recorded in teaching about the basic yoga poses. Training on a health and fitness program shows resilience and unique determination as the fitness and relaxation training activities are demanding. I look forward to perfecting these skills to ensure that I inspire as many individuals as possible. However, the training session made me realize that perhaps I am not resilient and self- determined enough because I could not challenge myself to more complex yoga training sessions. I am certain that if I would have tried, I would have recorded success. To do better, I look forward to undertaking more complex tasks not only regarding the Yoga training session but also in other aspects of life. By subjecting myself to more challenging tasks, I am certain that I will understand the importance of self-determination and push through difficult situations. If I get an opportunity to train again, I will challenge myself to more complex training exercises to inspire myself and my audience. I feel that I could have done things differently. Although the video was a success, I feel that I did not fully exploit my potential in the training session. The basic skills that I need to do better include resilience and self-drive. The two skills will make it possible for me to believe in myself and to push through some of the challenging situations.
Action Plan
I look forward to making significant improvements in the future. I will offer training on the basic yoga poses to my friends to ensure that they also benefit from it. However, while taking up the role of training and educating them, I will look beyond the basic yoga poses and give them ideas on more advanced levels of yoga poses. By exposing them to these complex poses, I will inspire them and I am certain that they will strive to get to the complex poses. The basic way of improving is by being self-determined, resilient, and taking up challenging tasks. Apart from the elementary skills, I have to constantly be in touch with my trainer to ensure that I gain the necessary skills required for the advancement to complex yoga poses. If I were given an opportunity to train individuals in another session, I will definitely challenge myself with the complex poses and avoid looking at the training from a basic angle.
