A Response to Douglas and Harriet Narratives
These two authors have written about their experience of slavery in America. In the history of America, slaver refers to an era whereby all races were negatively affected for many generations. Slaves were suffering from both physical and psychological torture. For instance, Harriet Jacob accounts for her girlhood life incidence. According to Harriet, slavery was marked by two parties, slave and slave owner slaves experienced the torture of different kinds while the slave owners were impacted through becoming harsh and brutal themselves (Jacobs n.p). It is true that slaves, especially girls and women, went through sexual harassments from American males. Harriet was owned by Doctor Flint who wanted to have sex with her. Later she escaped to New York where she was owned by Mrs Bruce, who paid for her freedom (Jacobs n.p). Later Harriet became one of the activists. Even in recent days, the condition in the United States has been improved through the founding of movements.
For instance, there are many feminist movements in the country which are advocating for gender equality. A few days ago, a worldwide movement resulting from African Americans’ experiences started after George Floyd’s death. Therefore, it is true that the formation of movements is effective in managing slavery fatalities. Also, Douglas was among the slaves who became activists. Douglas has effectively participated in the abolition of the condition of slavery (Douglass n.p). After escaping slavery, he became one of the famous public speakers, author and activist. Following the autobiographies of these two authors, the era of slavery was marked by tough experiences by the slaves, and they were ever struggling to get out of the condition. However, from their works, it is vivid that slavery is manageable through the creation of awareness to the people even today. These two people have influenced people a lot, and they have contributed to the mitigation of slavery fatalities.
