ABORTION
Abortion is the act of terminating a pregnancy in a clinic, or by the use of the pill. Over the years, abortion has been a topic of concern by various stakeholders who raise questions on legal aspect, religious aspect whether it is a scientific necessity for public health. For this reasons different countries differ in their approach and policies guiding practices of abortion. In some countries, abortion is viewed as a crime while in others it is not based on their approach.
I believe abortion is not a crime and is more of a medical issue rather than a legal issue and has some health benefits attributed to it. The benefits include safeguarding life and health of the mother and baby. In the event that the pregnancy is likely to risk the health of the mother then the act is applicable and recommended by doctors to protect mothers rather than risking both lives. Abortion thus helps in limiting severe complication that may occur during child birth.
Another benefit is it helps in eradication of unwanted pregnancies, inequality and having a child of one’s choice. Women should decide the time to have children and the number they want as it is their universal right to access good health, education and thrive in their carriers similar to their male counterparts. Abortion would not only aid women achieve their goals but also in situations when they get abused sexually resulting to unwanted pregnancies that causes a lot of pain to these victims. Early marriages which are rampant in Muslim communities can be eradicated by the act. Lastly abortion can be used as a family planning tool in an effort to control the growing population as well as aid the parents to have healthy children that they are able to manage in terms of meeting all their needs sustainably.
However, despite abortion having the above advantages it is viewed as the act of killing innocent lives who are denied equal opportunity to those who are born. The act is widely condemned by a lot of religions especially Christians who believe life starts at the womb. Abortion may bring psychological impairment in woman as it is viewed by many as killing therefore posing a health risk to perpetrators.
In conclusion, abortion should not be perceived to be a crime but rather an option to those women in need based on their situation. Having good policies guiding the act would reduce maternal deaths resulting from illegal abortion. It would grant the mothers a fundamental right to access good health as well.
