Academic portfolio
NURS 6002
WEEK 5 DISCUSSIONS
2ND RESPONSE
Hello Heather. Thank you for the post. According to Chamblee, Dale, Drews, Spahis, & Hardin, 2015, an academic portfolio should document one’s educational growth and projects a professional image by showing the progression of one’s nursing career, continuing education, clinical competence, and professional development. Accomplishments involve goals, awards, and honors achieved during the previous roles. They are measurable and can be classified into leadership, scholarship, and service or practice achievements.
Achievements included in the portfolio should include evidence-based projects and quality improvement projects engaged in at different units, mentoring, research conducted and findings disseminated, peer-reviewed articles published, and evidence-based educational programs designed among others. Leadership achievements should include the number of committees chaired collaborating with interdisciplinary groups, leadership positions held in different organizations or professional nursing, mentoring others, and engagement in advocacy campaigns and healthcare policy development. Service accomplishments include development and leading in activities that promoted the well-being and spiritual support group for nurses, facilitating work for a homeless health clinic, relaying life and suicide prevention, and participating in volunteer community services for organizations. Residency programs and preceptor programs for new nurses can also be part of the accomplishments in an academic portfolio.
