What aspects of Dr. William’s behavior influence the decisions of the families he works with and possibly influence their children’s ultimate health outcomes?

From the “A Day in the Sleep Clinic” case study, there are numerous aspects of Dr. William, which influence his decisions of the families he worked with and probably influenced the children’s ultimate health outcome. The patients were all from races, ethnicities, cultures, and they had different socioeconomic status.

Most of the behaviors of Dr. William were frustrating. He possibly allowed his assumptions, stereotypes, and personal experiences to influence the provider-patient communication. Out of the three patients discussed in the case study, two were from different cultural backgrounds. The doctor was biased, which could have possibly influenced the future health result outcome for the patients.

Firstly, Dr.Williams made numerous assumptions about the patients he attended to, instead of enquiring from them what he could not understand. For instance, he did not ask the Waleed family what they meant by someone cast an evil eye on their child. Additionally, he assumes that without an insurance cover, the family cannot get help. However, according to Rita, Dr. William should have inquired about a daytime sleep study, because there could be a probability that it was free.

Additionally, he uses medical jargon while talking to his patients, which makes them not to understand, and can adversely affect the medical decision families make. The doctor should find an interpreter who will help him and the patient understand what he meant.

Furthermore, he does not consider the cultural aspects of the patients and instead assumes that the parents do not mind their child. When talking to Chi and Bao Phans, the former, who was the child’s mother, remained silent all through. This made Dr. Waleed assume that she does not care about her child. Nonetheless, according to Vietnamese culture, when one is talking, the man is the one who should be addressed, and the woman should remain silent. If Dr. William had asked why the woman was quiet, the man could have explained, which could have avoided the family perceiving him as harsh and rude.

Culture, ethnicity, race, and social and economic status have a massive impact on families’ experiences from the health care system. From the “A Day in the Sleep Clinic” case study, the medical doctor did not handle the factors effectively, which adversely impacted various patients.
