After School Program for Teenagers
After School Program for Teenagers
After school programs provide child care to school-aged teenagers while not at school. They include a range of programs from summer camps and daycare centers to an after school club operating within the community (Nicholson, Collins, & Holmer, 2014). With the rising number of teenagers with working-class parents, most children are left unsupervised when out of school sessions. These have the prospect of exposing them to engage in illegal activities such as shoplifting, abuse of drugs and alcohol, and engage in illicit sexual behaviors leading to early pregnancies. Most parents in NY are looking for a secure place for their children while out of school sessions.
Needs Assessment
The proposed after school program is designed to provide a safe and secure place for school going teenagers in NY City when schools are not in session. A needs assessment survey is conducted through holding interviews, meetings, and distributing surveys to critical individuals in the community and education department. The assessment will determine whether there is a need to establish after school programs at respective towns in the state.
Given the similarity of needs, a general mission and objectives are developed for the proposed after school program for the teenagers (Hofstrand, 2016). The mission for the program is: To provide a safe and secure haven full of respect and love for school going teenagers while out of the school sessions. The program’s design will however vary depending on the resources and specific needs of students in the selected towns.
Programs and operations
After school program is going to operate as a government based provider operating under the office of NY Mayor. It will operate as an after school program and located at municipal buildings across various towns in NY. The community location is within a walking distance for the most targeted students. The program targets school children from kindergarten through eighth grade aged 4-15 years. The club will be in operation before and after school as well as during weekends, summer, school holidays, and vacations.
Daily operations for each club will be run by community volunteers and three staff recruited by the office of the Mayor. These staff will be tasked with providing learning activities, community services, and social skills training. The town administration will be charged with administrative and financial functions of the after school club for the teenagers. The funding of the program is by the NY office of the Mayor and also donor organizations and corporate bodies.
Conclusion
The implementation of after school programs for teenagers across town in NY will meet the needs of parents and children. The program will offer a haven for children to learn, gain social skills, and engage in community services.
