Airline Staff Case

Introduction

The situation at Rising Sun Airlines is one that the management is well aware of but refuses to take the necessary and available options to improve. The employees at the company are a frustrated lot that wishes that their working conditions would be improved and have an increase in staff members. According to Kappel (2016), employee turnover has an impact on any business, and therefore a company should work on maintain employees, which is not the case with the airline.  By insisting that the few workers already on the ground are enough to carry out the many chores at the airport, the company risks the quality of work the employees do (Bernstein & Buell, 2016). In the long run, it leads to complaints by customers whom they are working hard to attract and maintain. Even though the company does not want to invest more in paying salaries, it should look at the bigger picture. That is, by giving employees the necessary support to work efficiently, the airline would, in return, offer the best services to their customers. In that case, things could be different if the management acknowledged that it needed more members of the staff to achieve efficiency within the desired time.

Contributor to the situation

The lack of cooperation in the top offices prompts one of them to assess the situation on the ground by working undercover literally. That means that the management does not value the ideas given among them, which affects the running of the company and worsens the situation. According to Osbourne and Hammoud (2017), in as much as a company desires to maximize profits, they should not sacrifice employees’ remuneration to achieve that but should otherwise engage them in crucial decisions that concern them directly.  On the ground, Kentaro Hayashi, the president of RSA Ground, realized that the employees were being overworked and could, therefore, not manage to work effectively (Bernstein & Buell, 2016). Additionally, he noticed that the employees who had worked there for long and had gained enough experience were capable of meeting the desired quality of work in the set time. Either way, those that were hired recently did not have the right experience and lacked the motivation to work at the airline. By engaging them and understanding their expectations and points of view, they would improve in their work and meet the set goals.

Ethical Considerations

Some of the ethical issues associated with the situation at Rising Sun Airlines comprise unethical leadership whereby influential individuals in the company fail to offer the necessary support. Additionally, there are unrealistic and conflicting or unsustainable goals that the employees cannot meet. By expecting the workers to perform duties of a higher number of employees, the management has set the bar high which is not achievable until the necessary measures are taken. In that case, some of the ethical considerations that would be changing the management and increasing the workforce to avoid discrimination and harassment of the employees.

Specific goals

The specific goals that the company should consider meeting are improving the airline’s workforce on the ground as their contribution is vital. By ensuring that the employees are comfortable with the working hours and are not pressurized, they are likely to work effectively to the satisfaction of the employer.  According to Skilbeck (2019), employees who are motivated are more productive and go the extra mile to perform in their responsibilities. In that case, RSA should work towards motivating their employees, and by so doing, they will reap big from the quality of services the customers will get.

Possible solutions

In the wake of technological advancements, the company can as well consider the use of tracking devices to monitor the employees and their performance.  According to Hakkarainen (2019), the use of technology in supervision reduces the burden of the administration and offers transparency as well. In that, instead of employing many supervisors, RSA can consider adding more staff in the struggling areas of work in the airline.   Another solution that the company can consider is offer training to all the new employees and attractive wages to motivate them to work and deliver within the set time.
