***YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY and STATEMENT OF INTENTION must be submitted at the start of the week of presentations***
Task 1: Persuasive Oral Presentation
Requirements:
- Present an oral point of view on a current issue of your choice. This must be accompanied by your set of notes AND a bibliography of sources.
Date: 16 and 23 July Time Allocation: 4 – 6 minutes |
NOTE: If you intend to use a video, the footage should not go for over a minute. These multimedia devices are to be used as a background to the presentation and should not contain notes.
Registering your topic: Topics must be submitted to your English teacher for approval. Your topic should be worded in the form of a contention beginning with the word ‘That ….’ (e.g. That the best way to combat domestic violence is to change societal attitudes towards women)
Oral Presentation: Statement of Intention
Requirements:
- Provide a 300-500 word explanation that explains how you have constructed your oral presentation.
- This should be written in first-person.
- Below are the sub-headings you should address and questions to help you to know what to cover:
- The purpose of your oral presentation:
- “To persuade my audience that Human trafficking is a bigger deal then they think”
- The way you will structure your presentation:
- How will you begin your presentation and why What is human trafficking, how does it happen?
- How will you choose to order your arguments how it starts, what happens while being trafficked, the stats?
- Why will you include and address opposing arguments to your point of view the people being trafficked believe they are going to have a better life?
- How will you choose to open and end your presentation and why ask the audience how they would react If they lived in a third world country, were unaware of human trafficking and slavery and were offered the chance at a better life, a new house, clothes etc. ?
- The persuasive techniques (metalanguage) you will use and how you intend to position your audience:
- You should be using a variety of persuasive techniques from our studies and from your textbook (see pp.41-45 in your textbook)
- You should explain what techniques you will use and how you intend to position your audience.
Example
I will begin my speech with a short narrative describing the setting of a factory that employs child labourers. I will do this to try and engage my audience’s 5 senses, in particular, to help them to visualise the awful conditions that children have to work in, and put themselves in the shoes of the children. The use of 2nd person narration is much more confronting, and is intended to close the gap between the audience and the experience of being in and working in one of these factories.
Topic Proposal
Issue: Human Trafficking in Australia
Contention: anyone can be a target to trafficking, try and make the audience aware
Supporting arguments: its illegal, it can traumatise young people, what is trafficking? Are the people local?
