Many believe that the wealthy can consume anything they want. Excessive consumption, however, causes ecological disorganization and disrupts the normal functioning of the ecosystem. The ecosystem then becomes unstable, thus inhibiting further growth and reproduction of both living and non-living organisms. Compared to the poor and the middle class, the wealthy class is said to create more ecological harm. Criminology considers excessive consumption, which disrupts the ecosystem as a green crime. Environmental footprints are a way of measuring the availability of biocapacity against ecological disruptions. An environment is said to be sustainable if the results of the prints have a figure less than 1.0; however, if the value is more than 1.0, then it is unsustainable.
The behavioral choices the wealthy people engage in results in the violation of green crime law. The rich engage in massive consumption of products, which leads to the exhaustion of resources. The behavior of this class of people can lead to excessive harm to the ecosystem and cause less or no regeneration of resources. The nations and concerned bodies at large have found solutions to prevent the excessive use of the ecology. First, they looked into the production industry, which is the leading cause of production. The government and support agents compiled treaties, legislation, and regulations. (Sutton, p.12 identified that the laws were written and submitted to the production industries, and they had to be followed to the letter. The consequences of not adhering are clearly stated down so that they understand the consequences of their actions.
By limiting the production industries, we will also get to define the rich people in their level of consumption. Some of the benefits of protecting the ecological system are that it will give room for the regeneration of resources. Environmental footprints will be sustainable; that is, the figure will be less than 1.0. The living and non –living things will have a conducive environment to live in due to plenty of resources available. The issue of depletion of resources will reduce at a high rate. Researchers have profoundly contributed to the promotion of sustainable ecology and also limit the destruction consumption habits of the wealthy, through the development of policies controlling people is much easier as it will reduce destruction. The research study is essential since it has helped in coming up with new strategies and helped many understand the science behind not consuming excess due to the adverse effects that follow.
