I joined the U.S. Army through Military Accessions Vital to National Interest (MAVNI)which allows someone to join the military that has special skills in the healthcare field and someone who has special language and cultural backgrounds. My career goals were to excel in my academic endeavors while at the same time serving the American people. It has been five years since I joined the Army, and I am serving as a patient administration specialist working with healthcare professionals.
I studied art and design before I joined the Army, and it developed my foundation of creative thinking and Army developed my professional skills. The Army gives me a chance to work with professionals from all backgrounds and makes me proud. Culture
It was a hard to keep up with the civilian education during my active service year because there are many military exercises to break up my education and I could not keep up with the curriculum online class. And I stayed overseas way too harder than staying in the states. I am so confident what I am doing and my education goal and as I selected this program helpful my career goal and helpful to the nation as well. I researched health information management major and UW offers the best program in the nation. I can get a knowledge health informatics and information management at the same time, get knowledge from it. My career in health administration started when I joined the United States Army.
I chose Patient Administration Specialist as my military occupational specialty, and since then I have held various positions in the healthcare field. The positions I held during my five years of service include electronic medical records specialist in outpatient and inpatient department at Brian Allgood Army Community Hospital. In Korea, I served as a patient health information specialist in pre-procedure unit and intensive care unit at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. And in Germany, I served as an executive administration non-commissioned officer to support medical command staff team at 1st Medical Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.
Also, I volunteered in emergency rooms through the American Red Cross to assist healthcare providers with giving patients medical information for procedure guidance.
Personal Hardship
I am the first member of our family to move from Korea to the United States. People are coming to the U.S to achieve the American Dream. Living in the U.S. is very difficult with different culture and language barrier. I admit that I am one of them who is finding it hard to adapt. I was an international student, and now I am an active service member of the United States Army.
Learning Experience
All of my experiences developed professional abilities to use in the real-life work environment as a healthcare management specialist and encouraged me to continue my education in the HIHIM program. My previous two overseas tours gave me experiences in how to manage and balance myself as a part-time student and full-time soldier.
It shaped me to be mentally and physically tough, resilient, and adaptable in the face of adversity. As a soldier, I am disciplined with time management and balancing academics and field exercises. I am an internally driven professional and strive to learn from past mistakes and improve. Also, I am a passionate, motivated and a strong member of the United States Army Medical Corp.
Experiential Learning
HIHIM will help to build the cornerstone of developing my career in a health service corps in the United States Army.
