Approach Chosen and Future Work Environment
The approach I will be discussing is narrative therapy, whereas my preferred future work environment is as a school setting, preferably a large urban high school. My choice of this approach is based on various reasons.
Reasons for Selected Approach
I believe that narrative therapy would be useful when working in a large urban high school because it will allow learners to be self-aware of their problems. For example, when the students are externalized from the problems at hand, it will enable them to understand and appreciate their strengths (Hutto & Gallagher, 2017). Additionally, narrative therapy will enable learners to live in a way that reflects their goals and values (Neukrug, 2018). For instance, through therapy, they will find a voice and become experts in their lives.
Potential Limitations
One of the potential limitations of narrative therapy is that it does not have a defined recipe or formula. For example, since narrative therapy is based on philosophy, it might require different recipes for different students (Neukrug, 2018). The other limitation is that I might require the learners to conduct conversations on their own (Hutto & Gallagher, 2017). The limitation here is that inability of some learners to express themselves due to lack of confidence may inhibit the therapy’s success.
Application of The Approach
Based on narrative therapy analysis, I feel that I could confidently apply the approach in addressing issues such as human dysfunction, wellness, growth, and change. I can effectively use the approach to address mental dysfunctions and ensure the mental well-being of learners. Also, I can use its tenets to enable learners to grow better and change some actions that contribute to their mental health issues. I am confident about using the approach to contribute to the general well-being of the students.
