Art Exploration
The art under analysis is a photographic work by Andy Goldsworthy depicting the beauty of fall leaves. The artist has utilized the principles of design with a lot of skill and expertise thus bringing out a picture that is exquisite yet simple in its outlook. To achieve this, the artist blended three important design principles which include; balance and alignment, proportion and contrast of the elements in the picture. At first glance, the viewer can see the effect of proper alignment on the photo. Through the balanced arrangement of the leaves, the picture has been given a unique trait that easily catches the eye in contemplation of the symmetry that has been employed. The concentric pattern has helped to equalize the shapes and weight of the leaves. The tone of the photograph has also been highlighted through the alignment focus. The textural weight of the photograph has also received considerable equilibrium from the effectual alignment. Proportion refers to the relation between visual sizes and weights in artworks. The artist has also used the proportional focus to bring stability to his art. The leaves are not focused on one region to the neglect of another area, instead they are well distributed to give the page a proportional arrangement. Lastly, is the contrast of the photo, the bright colors of the leaves have been contrasted with the background which is a bit dull, and this aids in highlighting the image thus giving it adequate emphasis.
The image can also be interpreted subjectively whereby the viewer catches a glimpse of the message which the artist intends to pass to his audience. The painstaking creation of the gorgeous art draws the viewer into an intricate connection with nature thus bringing in a sense of energy. The pattern used for the flowers forms the imagery of a ripple that originates from the center and extends to the outer circle. Thus, while the alignment draws us inside into a close connection with nature, it also offers vibrance to the viewer. The contrast design used by the artist also provides a soothing effect to the viewer. The hues are well arranged which makes them pleasing to the eyes of the beholder. The contrast between the background and the leaves enhances the quality of the image making it to become more lucid and attractive.
