1) What’s Up, Everyone. I accidentally submitted an unfinished reply.

The article I chose to share with you all is titled House passes $3 trillion coronavirus stimulus plan, faces pushback in Republican-led Senate written by Maureen Groppe & Ledyard King from USA Today. This article discusses the ongoing bill that is being voted on in the white house to provide financial aid to Americans during this coronavirus pandemic. The measure passed with 208 votes for and 199 votes against. This bill will pump billions of dollars to financially hit states and local governments and provide a second round of direct payments to millions of Americans. Republican senators voting against the bill call it a “liberal wish list” but are being faced by increased pressure to change their minds as unemployment rates continue to rise. This bill will be referred to as the Health and  Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act, or the HEROS Act, and will include; a “Heroes fund” that will provide “hazard pay” to essential employees, funds to beef up testing and contact tracing, a second round of $1200 economic impact payments, funds for emergency grants to small businesses, COBRA subsidies to workers who have lost their health insurance because they’ve been laid off, an extension to weekly $600 federal unemployment payments through January, and funds to help renters and homeowners make monthly payments.

The information provided in this article is something we should all care about. It is important that we know what actions our government is taking to help us get through this pandemic. We should be aware of what programs are out there that we may be able to benefit from and how can we get access to them. It is also a good thing for us to know what money our government has access too and where it is all going. I believe we all pay taxes in some way, so we have to know how those dollars are being used.

2) Hello everyone!

The article I chose is called “Two Projects are Filming again, Here’s How They’re Doing it”. The article details how the director of a new eight-episode Netflix series developed a system that allows his cast and crew to work on their project, without breaking Iceland’s quarantine protocol. The article explains how the system takes all of the necessary precautions that are enforced by Iceland. Including security guards yelling “two meters” when someone gets too close, colored armbands that indicate where on set each member of the crew is allowed to go.

I think that this article is significant because it is yet another reminder of the severity and the widespread effect the pandemic. It is also a good display of adaptation to the new temporary reality, as they have found a way to work around these new regulations. This is a somewhat positive news story regarding COVID-19 compared to most and therefore worth the attention. Although not all operations are able to work around these conditions it is important to note the instances where this is possible because it provides a sense of optimism. Some may think that this is an unnecessary risk because Netflix has enough shows and there does not seem to be any urgency to finish. But in my opinion, most will view this and have some sense of security and perhaps excitement for the new show.

3) Hello everyone, I hope you’re good.

The article I chose for this task was “Pakistan plane crash survivor: ‘All I could see was fire'” published on BBC News. The article summarizes the accident that occurred last Friday is Karachi, Pakistan, in which a Pakistan International Airlines plane crashed in a residential area of that city. One of the survivors recounts his experience, as well as residents of the area explain how they lived the accident from another point of view. It is known from the accident that the pilot reported a fuselage failure and subsequently gave the “mayday” signal before crashing; however, the cause of the failure that caused the accident is still unknown. The airline has hired private international investigators as they do not trust the veracity of the investigation being carried out by the Pakistani authorities.

The reason why I chose this article and I think it is important to read more news like this is because of the impact that this type of situation has on those who live it. If the accident had happened in the United States or any other country with more popularity in the news, the story would be different. It is sad to hear news like this, in which many people die, in this case 97 were the deaths of which it has not yet been determined how many were passengers and how many were residents of the area. It is not the first time that a plane from this airline crashes, in the past decade three other accidents occurred, leaving more than 410 deaths. Hopefully events like this will stop happening.

4) Hey everyone, this week I chose the article “What ‘Jaws’ can teach us about our coronavirus response” written by Julian Zelizer. In this article Zelizer talks about the similarities the citizens of Amity in the movie JAWS and the citizens of America are currently experiencing. In the beginning of the movie there was a female that decided to go skinny dipping and gets attacked by the shark; people begin to freak out, but the mayor insists on keeping the beaches open to keep revenue up. Governors today are faced with the same decision should they lockdown the state and slow the number of cases down or reopen the state risking the health of their citizens to make sure the economy doesn’t crash.

We should care because if our governor decides to fully reopen our state we will go back to “normal” without taking the extra precautions to keep each other safe. But if Florida opens up and the cases skyrocket, we won’t be able to keep up with the sick. Since we are in phase 2, I have noticed things go back to normal, but people are not wearing masks or social distancing. People need to realize to get rid of this virus we need to work together to keep each other safe by doing simple things.
